Last weekend, in solidarity with the DC Black Mothers March, we joined impacted families, parents, youth, and advocates at the Mothers Movement March at the California Capitol. We talked to legislators about the violence of family policing, shared our stories, and advocated for policies that protect ALL of us. We are fighting for our children, our families, and an end to the punitive policies that tear our communities apart. Thank you to the FREE Project, our amazing partners and volunteers, and impacted families who joined us ✊❤️ Video credit: Dennis Delmar

Dear Community,

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bennie Burrell. Many of you know Bennie as a house manager and peer support specialist, or from our Parole Board workshops. He was also a beloved father, son, friend, All Of Us or None member, Path 2 SEED Cohort 1 graduate, basketball coach, and much more. Bennie’s kindness, sense of humor, and warm presence deeply touched all of our lives.

We first met Bennie and his loving family while he was still incarcerated. Through the hard work of his support system, Bennie was released and welcomed into one of our transitional homes. He went on to become deeply involved in giving back to our community during his time at Starting Over.

Bennie was incredibly devoted to supporting other individuals & families toward release and post-release. Over the years, he facilitated over fifty Parole Board workshops, wrote hundreds of support letters, and gave endless words of encouragement to our employment participants.

Bennie was a guiding light to our community and the whole team at Starting Over. We’ll remember him by his jokes, the smell of the pork chops he’d fry up, his love for Raising Cane’s, and his numerous acts of kindness toward us all. Bennie inspired us to believe in ourselves above all, and to live our truths without shame. To honor Bennie, we will be presenting the annual Bennie Burrell Service Award to individuals who carry on Bennie’s legacy of brotherly love, care, and dedication to our community.

If you have any memories or words you would like to share about Bennie that you would like to share with our community and his family, please leave a comment or contact [email protected].

Street Outreach Recap! Last month, our focus was on the city of San Bernardino, where we observed a higher concentration of unhoused neighbors, with needs for items like socks, tarps, and blankets. We connected with 136 individuals, sharing care/hygiene kits and local resources.
This month, we're asking our community for support with item donations - we're in need of items like socks, blankets, hand sanitizers, baby wipes, and more. Feel free to come by our office during open hours (Mon-Fri, 9-5) if you have any items you are able to drop off to support our Outreach efforts!

Regardless where we've been, where we are, or where we go, Mothers are the reason we are here. This Mother’s Day, we honor motherhood in all its forms - we send our love and solidarity to mothers who are currently and formerly incarcerated, mothers with loved ones on the inside, mothers who have lost children to state violence, and mothers who are separated from their children because of family policing.

Join us on May 18th in Sacramento for the Mothers Movement March as we advocate for the repeal of policies that separate families and push for REAL solutions that keep our families safe and together! Learn how you can join at link in bio or at startingoverinc.org/events/mothers-movement-march

For International Worker's Day, we're honoring workers who fight for our rights, organize against unfair labor practices, and refuse to leave each other behind. In particular, we're uplifting our justice-impacted workforce - some of our most vulnerable workers. Even with the passage of the Fair Chance Act, it's common for California employers to discriminate or retaliate against individuals with a past conviction - leading to an unemployment rate of over 27%.

That's why it's up to us to educate ourselves on our rights and learn how to build worker power together to stand stronger together against employers who exploit our labor and engage in illegal practices. With the support of the California Workplace Outreach Project (CWOP), Starting Over, Inc. offers free Know Your Rights trainings to workers across the Inland Region on reporting violations of the Fair Chance Act, forming unions, wages, worker's comp, and much more, with a focus on justice-impacted workers.

As we close out Second Chance Month, we're proud to share a new partnership: Ruman, a graduate of our Path 2 SEED employment development program, returned to our office last month with his employer to partner with our new Second Chance staffing initiative, ReLeaf Works. Ruman felt called to leave the ladder down for other formerly incarcerated individuals and help create new second chance employment opportunities after his experience with employer discrimination post release.

Ruman's commitment to supporting justice impacted individuals facing the same challenges he did inspires us. We're grateful to be partnering with Ruman and his employer, and call upon other employers in the region to join us in creating new opportunities for our impacted populations. Learn more about ReLeaf Works and partner with us as an employer at startingoverinc.org/releaf
