One of my greatest inspirations for joining the Marine Corps was the movie “An Officer and a Gentleman”. Specifically, the USMC Drill Instructor Gunnery Sergeant Foley, played by actor Louis Gossett Jr. He won an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and an Image award for his performance. Having previously served as a U.S. Army Ranger, Gossett was perfect for the role. In a career that lasted over 50 years and over 200 acting credits, he was truly a master of his craft.

Lou passed away today. I’m grateful for the art he created and the courage he instilled in so many to pursue their dreams. His portrayal of a US Marine wasn’t the only reason I enlisted, but is was part of it.

Louis Gossett Jr., you will be missed.

A replica of the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial "The Wall" is arriving in Menifee. On Thursday, April 6, 2023 there will be a Welcome Home Vietnam Vets Ceremony at 10:00 a.m. The Semper Fi #1 Color Guard will be presenting the colors, our bagpiper, Tress Maksimuk, is performing, and I am one of the guest speakers. In addition, Cpl. Tom Tolentino is playing Taps on the bugle every sunset while the wall is there.

Ian Frank Tortorici gave his life fighting for the freedoms of others. He was killed in Ukraine during a Russian middle strike on a pizza restaurant. His service will be held on Monday, July 31st at 1415, at the Riverside National Cemetery amphitheater.
