Every day, we honor the memory of the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation. But today, on Memorial Day, we join together as a community, and as a country, to collectively pay tribute to their sacrifice.

Among the many heroes we honor is Staff Sergeant Ysmael Villegas, a son of the Casa Blanca community and the first Medal of Honor recipient from Riverside County. His bravery in World War II, giving his life in his final act of service, reflects the profound courage and selflessness shown by so many across our history.

As we reflect on his story and those of countless others, let us carry their legacy forward with gratitude, unity, and a continued commitment to the values they fought to protect.

Today we recognize the Riverside Auto Center, a proud Ward 5 business and an important driver of our local economy. Since its grand opening in 1965 as the first auto center of its kind in the nation, it has continued to play a major role in Riverside’s growth and success.

Today, nearly a quarter of the City’s total sales tax revenue comes from the Auto Center, supporting essential city services and investments throughout our community.

Thank you to the dealerships, employees, and customers who continue to make the Riverside Auto Center a cornerstone of our local economy.

Riverside, it has been two years since you entrusted me to represent Ward 5, including Casa Blanca, Arlington, Arlington South, Presidential Park, and Ramona. It is an honor to serve you.

Together, we have made real progress, from advancing public safety measures like the kratom and nitrous oxide ban to strengthening our local economy. We have also continued building community pride through events and public art like Casa Blanca’s Ojos del Tiempo.

There is more to do, and I remain committed to delivering results for our neighborhoods. Read the full 2025-2026 Year in Review at the link in my bio.

Keeping our neighborhoods safe and protecting the health of our community, especially our youth, has always been a top priority for me. In recent years, we’ve seen a troubling rise in the misuse of substances like kratom and nitrous oxide, often sold in forms that make them more potent and appealing to young people. Here in Riverside, enforcement efforts between 2023 and 2025 uncovered hundreds of nitrous oxide tanks and thousands of cartridges, and across Southern California, synthetic kratom has been linked to addiction, overdoses, and tragic loss of life.

That’s why on February 18, 2026, I took action and spearheaded two public safety measures to regulate kratom and prohibit the unlawful sale of nitrous oxide in our city, while still protecting legitimate medical and commercial uses. These efforts were developed in close partnership with the Riverside Police Department and the City Attorney’s Office to directly respond to what our community has been experiencing.

This week, my colleagues and I unanimously approved these measures. I’m proud of the work we’ve done together, and I remain committed to continuing this effort to keep Riverside safe, healthy, and strong for everyone.

The SSgt. Salvador J. Lara Casa Blanca Library now has a dedicated space celebrating Latino artists and authors — Ojos del Tiempo — where residents can see themselves, their stories, and their culture reflected in the books they read and the art that surrounds them. 📚🎨

In collaboration with District 1 County Supervisor Jose Medina, the City of Riverside Library Department, and the Friends of the Riverside Library, we are excited to announce the creation of a dedicated art and literature space inside the SSgt. The wait is over! The exhibit will officially open on April 2, 2026, and I invite the community to join us for this special celebration. Together, we are creating spaces that honor culture and inspire future generations.
