One of the ways we tell our diverse and unique Riverside stories is through historical markers, plaques, and interpretive signs. And as the most historic portion of town, we have a lot of these in Ward 1!

Over the years many of these plaques and markers have been neglected, vandalized, or stolen. Now, part of our Preserving Riverside’s Treasures initiative we are replacing these missing historical markers. In Ward 1 we always choose taking pride in our history over blight and neglect.

Why fix one sidewalk and pedestrian ramp in downtown when you can fix 109 of them?

Because of the grant-funded Civil Rights Walk project there will be new and repaired curbs, sidewalks, and ADA accessible ramps in over 100 locations in downtown this summer.

Best part? No financial impact to our general fund which means more money can be invested in other infrastructure projects across Riverside.

Ward 1 Townhall Tour launches in 12 days!

Within a two week span, we will host six specialty townhalls across the ward in addition to the regular neighborhood group meetings, City Council meetings, and office hours. Everything from conversations about services for seniors and small businesses, to best practices for maintaining your historic home, to how to be better connected with City Hall even if English is not your preferred language, and more.

We will soon be hitting the road on a whirlwind tour and want you to join in!

Next month I’ll be joining UCR’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute for a lecture on Riverside’s historic residential architecture—where the overwhelming majority of iconic homes and neighborhoods are in Ward 1.

“From elegant Victorians to striking Mid-Century Modern homes, Riverside's residential architecture reflects the city's remarkable growth and prosperity. Once the wealthiest city per capita in the nation, Riverside attracted some of the country's most talented architects, whose innovative designs shaped its neighborhoods for generations.

In this fascinating lecture, local historian, author, and City Councilmember Philip Falcone traces the evolution of Riverside's residential architecture from 1880 to 1960 while exploring the importance of preserving these architectural treasures for the future.”

Two major, development proposals to transform the Northside into a regional leader in sports and outdoor activities was met with great anticipation when they were unveiled last year. Since then, you may have wondered what is the latest with these projects at the former Ab Brown Sports Complex and former Riverside Golf Course?

Both are progressing through necessary planning, negotiations, and critical infrastructure studies. In short, all this metaphorical groundwork needs to occur before the actual groundwork of construction can advance through the City’s necessary public hearing and approval processes. Future opportunities for you to be involved in this process will be shared here!

The Loring Building is one of Downtown Riverside’s oldest landmarks. Over its 137-year history it has been home to an opera house, theater, library, City Hall, jail, courthouse, multiple banks, a pharmacy, shops like our beloved Mrs. Tiggywinkles, and more!

Its namesake, original owner Charles M. Loring, was a local legend who dedicated his life in Riverside to civic beautification from encouraging cohesive architecture to installing streetlights and street trees. The Riverside we know today with its tree-lined roads and historic downtown is largely due to the work of early Riversiders like Charles Loring who knew that beautification was not about aesthetics, but about taking pride in the places we live.

Our city board and commission members are key advisors to the City Council. As a former commissioner myself, I recognize how fundamental their work is to the success of our city.

Today a new Ward 1 transportation commissioner, Luke Lopez, took the oath of office and will now be a community voice to help implement transportation improvements for our ward from pedestrian and cyclist accessibility to traffic control and roadway repairs. Commissioner Lopez will serve us well!
