Shout out to Moreno Valley College for creating a powerful campus display in honor of their graduates. From flags and oversized banners to A-frames across the campus hub, MVC has beautifully set the stage to celebrate commencement in style.

This is exactly what we love to see across our district, campuses coming alive to celebrate student achievement. We hope all graduates feel seen and proud of this moment.

UCLA’s Cecilia Rios-Aguilar, Ph.D., and Davis Vo make a compelling case: California community colleges can help address the state’s nursing shortage.

By 2038, our state is projected to face a shortage of 36,000 nurses, the largest in the nation. Today, nearly 75% of California regions are already experiencing gaps in care.

California community colleges are part of the solution.

With 58 colleges already offering bachelor’s degree programs, we have seen what happens when we expand access to affordable, high-quality education. More than half of students who earn a bachelor’s degree through community colleges say they would not have done so otherwise, and nearly 90% say the degree was affordable and worth the cost.

AB 2301 (Soria) builds on this proven model by authorizing community colleges to offer Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees in underserved areas. This creates local, accessible pathways for students, especially working adults, first-generation students, and caregivers, to advance their careers while meeting critical workforce needs.

This is about more than degrees. It is about equity, access, and ensuring every community has the healthcare professionals it needs.
California has adapted its higher education system before to meet urgent workforce demands. We can do it again.
