This week we would like to recognize and thank our friends at Litchfield County Dispatch for the outstanding work they do day in and day out serving our community and supporting first responders throughout the county. Their calm voices, quick thinking, and professionalism are critical to every emergency response.

We are also proud to say that several members of the Riverton Volunteer Fire Department serve behind the headset as dispatchers as well. Their dedication to public safety extends far beyond the walls of our firehouse.

Thank you to all telecommunicators for being the first first responders and for everything you do behind the scenes every day.

In preparation for Opening Day and the upcoming Fisherman’s Breakfast, the Riverton Volunteer Fire Company is proud to announce the formation of our newest team:

Rapid Aquatic Trout Rescue Team (R.A.T.R.T.)

This highly trained unit will operate along the Farmington River and is tasked with:
• Assisting trout stranded in low water conditions
• Responding to reports of “suspiciously large fish”
• De-escalating conflicts between fishermen over “the one that got away”
• Providing mutual aid to neighboring departments for fish-related emergencies

Members completed an intensive training evolution this morning, including advanced net deployment and catch-and-release techniques.

Residents are reminded: If you see a trout in distress, do not approach — call 911.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the Fisherman’s Breakfast! 🎣

This evening, we joined our mutual aid partners from Granville MA Fire Department, Tolland MA Volunteer Fire Department and Town of Sandisfield Fire Department for a hands-on training session focused on SCBA confidence and survival skills. Crews worked through entanglement drills, low and reduced-profile maneuvers, window bailouts, and other challenging obstacles designed to simulate real-world fireground conditions.

Training side-by-side with our neighboring departments strengthens coordination, builds trust, and enhances our collective operational readiness. It ensures that when we meet on the fireground, it’s not the first time we’re working together.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to train with such a dedicated group and look forward to continuing to build strong mutual aid relationships.

Today, on International Women’s Day, I would like to extend a special thank you to all of the women of the Riverton Volunteer Fire Company.

Whether you are a Life Member, Fire Police, or Firefighter, your service and dedication make a meaningful difference to our department and our community.

This appreciation also extends beyond our membership. The mothers, wives, girlfriends, sisters, and daughters who share your loved ones with us — and who so often go above and beyond to support the department — deserve recognition as well. Your support never goes unnoticed.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you all, and I wish you a very Happy Women’s Day.
