message from U.S. Army Veteran and Police Chief Michael A. Coleman
is a day to honor and mourn the military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
Soldiers are public servants who perform their duties on behalf of our country. Some have given their lives for freedom. Every day, our soldiers around the world honor the mission to protect and ensure the safety of the United States through their courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment.
I had the privilege of serving with Private Patterson and Master Sergeant Nowitski. Both are now gone. I celebrate them daily because they sacrificed everything for this nation. On behalf of other like-minded distinguished veterans of the United States Armed Forces, I salute you for your service.
Soldiers are selfless warriors who routinely risk their well-being for others. A soldier will run toward gunfire to save a life and protect our democracy jumping from the sky, swimming through dangerous waters, and walking miles in defense of our freedoms.
Soldiers are trained professionals, but they are not invincible. They hurt. They cry… when the lights are off. Yet they rise the next day and do it all over again.
do not choose this work for the pay, the awards, or the appreciation they may receive. They do it because it is the right thing to do. Soldiers understand the importance of duty, honor, and loyalty; eyes up, chest out, shoulders back and unapologetic for loving their country.
To all and those who have served, I leave you with this: Thank you for all you have done, all you are doing, and all you will continue to do to keep our country safe.
As we observe Memorial Day, pray for the soldiers who died for your freedom.
