Greens Mill Bridge Deserves a Future that Preserves the Past!

Another successful Section 106 project is Green's Mill Bridge, a suspension bridge that spans the Little Niangua River, an arm of the Lake of the Ozarks. Completed in 1933, it was one of five bridges that were built in the 1930s to es**rt motorists around the new lake system. The only one of these bridges still standing, Green’s Mill Bridge was determined eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, “under Criterion C for engineering as a nationally significant example of a self-anchored suspension bridge” (Green’s Mill Bridge – An Engineering Treasure, https://greensmillhistoricalbridge.com).

In 2020, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) began construction of a new bridge to replace Green's Mill Bridge. As part of the Section 106 process, MoDOT marketed Green’s Mill Bridge through MoDOT’s Historic Bridge Program, which makes historic bridges available for adaptive reuse. In 2023, the bridge was transferred to Green's Mill Historical Bridge, Inc., a grassroots organization formed in 2018 specifically for the purpose of protecting Green’s Mill Bridge. The group was successful in preserving the bridge in place and opening it to pedestrian use. Such an outcome would not have been possible had it not been for public involvement in the Section 106 process.

Hello everyone. If you’re anywhere close to Green’s Mill Historical Bridge in Camden Co. Missouri and are looking for something awesome to do this evening, head on out to the bridge located on J Road between Highway 54 and Highway 7 in Camden County. A partial Lunar Eclipse is suppose to take place between 9:30 pm and 11:00 pm central time Zone. It should be a spectacular sight from the bridge. Don’t forget your camera!

Looking for bridge players in the Lake of the Ozarks area, Missouri, who enjoy playing the game. If there’s enough interest, we’ll organize a Contract Bridge fundraiser to help support the ongoing operational costs of Green’s Mill Historical Bridge. Games will be played as a marathon event with teams of two, playing 20 hands, with the highest score winning. Please spread the word to your bridge-loving friends and let me know.

Our Bridge Paint Night was a great success! Thirteen artists created their own renditions of the beautiful Green's Mill Historical Bridge, guided by artist Rebecca Hellman. Everyone left with wonderful memories and stories to share. A big thank you to Shelley Hellmann for all her hard work in organizing the event, and to all who attended. Hope to see you again next year!
