We would like to remind everyone of the local ordinance regarding open burning within town limits. Please take a moment to read and follow these important rules:
✅ Key Points of the Burning Ordinance (§ 92.09)
“Open burning” is defined as burning materials where air contaminants are emitted directly into the air without going through a stack or chimney from an enclosed chamber.
Open burning includes: yard cleanup waste (grass, leaves, weeds), cardboard, trash, etc.
It is prohibited to start, maintain or allow open burning of any materials — unless specifically authorized by the ordinance.
You may not burn:
- a building or structure.
- anything on a street, alley, sidewalk, or someone else’s property without permission.
- during unfavorable meteorological conditions (e.g., high winds, temperature inversions, drought, stagnant air).
When burning is allowed, it must meet the following rules:
- Must occur in a non-combustible container with enclosed sides & bottom, adequately vented, and a mesh lid to reduce embers.
- Only between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
- Fire must be attended at all times until fully extinguished.
- Fire must be extinguished immediately if it creates a pollution problem, a public health threat, nuisance or fire hazard.
- Only the burning of “paper, charcoal, clean wood products and clean petroleum products” is allowed.
- Fires are limited in size: no more than 3 feet in height and 4 feet in length, width or diameter.
- All burning must obey any and all state, federal and local laws.
🔎 Why this matters
Open burning can cause excessive smoke, air pollution, fire risk, trespass issues, and health hazards — especially in a rural farming community like ours. By following the ordinance you’re helping keep our town safe, clean and compliant. Also, the state Indiana Department of Environmental Management reminds that even if local rules allow burning, state regulations must also be followed.
🙏 Please do your part
If you plan to burn, make sure you’re allowed under the ordinance, use proper equipment, attend the fire until extinguished, and ensure you’re burning the right materials in the right conditions. If in doubt, contact our office before burning.
Thanks for helping keep Roachdale safe, clean and respectful of our neighbors. If you see someone burning illegally (or in an unsafe way), please call the Roachdale Police Department at 765-522-1785.
