It is with deep regret and an extremely heavy heart that we inform the citizens of the Roanoke Rapids area of the loss of one of our own. Battalion Chief Kevin Hawkins lost his battle with cancer on Tuesday October 22, 2019. Chief Hawkins was an instrumental part of shaping and maintaining the success of the Roanoke Rapids Fire Department for the past 20 years. He was a wonderful leader and mentor to all of us at the fire department. Chief Hawkins was the kind of person who was a joy to be around. He would always put a smile on your face with his positive outlook on everything in life. We, as a department, are better just for having him in our lives. Chief Hawkins was hired at Roanoke Rapids Fire Department on September 27th, 1999. He ascended the ranks of the fire department, serving honorably in each position on the path to his current position as Battalion Chief of “B-shift’. He never ceased to go above and beyond, not only for the citizens he served, but also his fire department brothers. He was well respected amongst his peers, with a leadership style focused on “family”. Any holidays he worked, he made it a personal obligation to cook the meal for his fire family and their families, to show his men the importance of family.
Chief Hawkins leaves a void that will be difficult to fill, in both his personal life and his professional life, but his faith in the lord ensures us all that he is in a better place.

Congrats to all these officers.
