After more than 24 years of service, we congratulate Captain Robert Reid “Bugg” on a well-earned retirement from the Roanoke Fire-EMS Department.

A career in the fire service is built on showing up—for your community, your crew, and those who need help most. Throughout more than two decades, Bugg did just that, leaving a lasting impact on the department and the people who had the opportunity to serve alongside him.

Residential structure fire in SE

Early morning fire at the Valley View Walmart

At 2:41AM, crews were dispatched by the E-911 Center to reports of a structure fire in the 4800 block of Valley View Blvd NW.

Our team on Medic 3 and Engine 3 A-Shift were the first to arrive and reported multiple bales of recycling materials on fire. Firefighters began knocking down the flames as additional resources arrived. The fire was extinguished at 3:10AM with no damage to the structure.

The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time. No injuries were reported. Updates will be posted as they are available.

Fire in SW

At 12:28PM, crews were dispatched by the E-911 Center to reports of a possible structure fire in the 600 block of Walnut Ave SW. The caller was offsite and advised cameras picked up smoke alarms sounding inside the residence.

Firefighters assigned to Engine 1 on A-Shift began arriving on scene at 12:31PM and reported smoke showing from the front of the home. The call was upgraded to a working fire.

At 12:44PM, the fire was knocked down. No injuries were reported. The fire damage was contained the level of origin. The cause is under investigation at this time.

Units responded to gas leak in SW

At 1:41PM, crews on C-Shift were dispatched by the E-911 Center to reports of an outside gas leak in the 3800 block of Franklin Road SW.

Our team worked alongside utility staff to ensure the incident was quickly resolved. Within 10 minutes of arrival the leak was contained. No injuries were reported.

After 23 years of service to the Roanoke Fire-EMS Department and the City of Roanoke, Captain Michael Jenkins has retired.

Some careers are measured by time. Others are measured by the people they’ve influenced, the challenges they’ve faced, and the example they’ve set every day.

Congratulations on a well-earned retirement, Jenkins!
