Lead poisoning is often called a “silent” danger because the symptoms can look like everyday problems or common illnesses. People may feel tired, irritable, have headaches, or stomach pain without realizing lead could be the cause.

You also can’t see, smell, or taste lead in water, food, or old paint. The only reliable way to know if someone has been exposed is through a blood lead test.

Many people don’t realize that there is no safe level of lead exposure. Even very small amounts can permanently harm the brain and nervous system, especially in children. Because symptoms are often mild or delayed, lead can build up in the body over time—especially in the bones—without a person knowing.

Why do kids eat lead paint?
Young children sometimes eat lead paint for a few simple reasons:
• It tastes sweet – Old lead paint can have a sweet, candy-like taste that attracts kids.
• They explore with their mouths – Babies and toddlers naturally put things in their mouths, including paint chips or dust.
• Pica (craving non-food items) – Some children develop a condition where they want to eat things like dirt or paint, often linked to low iron or zinc.
• Curiosity & texture – Peeling paint can look interesting and feel crunchy, making kids more likely to try it.
Important: Homes built before 1978 may have lead paint. Even small amounts can be harmful.
If you’re concerned, consider getting your home tested or speaking with a professional.

The Lead Safe Grant is now accepting applications! You may qualify, and if you do, we will cover the construction costs! ALL kids deserve a healthy home.
