HUGE: For the 8th consecutive year, Governor JB Pritzker has balanced Illinois’ budget while maintaining the state’s $0 deficit.

The governor’s budget centers affordability by providing nearly $100 million to help families afford groceries, over $500 million to lower the cost of housing, and $5 million for medical debt relief.

“Every element of the budget was thoroughly deliberated with the aim of achieving widespread affordability for all Illinoisans,” said Gov. Pritzker. “I look forward to signing the budget and delivering for Illinois’ working families in all stages of life.”

The Indiana supermajority removed the income cap on school vouchers. You know what that means? Elon Musk could move here, send his 13(?) kids to private school, and Hoosier taxpayers will pay for it.

And any private school receiving those funds could then turn around and increase their tuition so all those truly needy students who may actually be trapped in a struggling school still can’t afford to go to that private school. In other words, many private schools are taking vouchers for those students they deem “desirable” but still pricing out those kids that they may find “undesirable.”

No income limit. No means test. Increasing tuition.

Public schools, your kids’ schools, are getting a smaller piece of a shrinking pie because the wealthy are sending their kids to private school while the rest of us pay for their kids to go but still can’t afford private school for your own. That’s a wealth transfer, not school choice.

As I speak to many parents and teachers in HD 50, I understand the issue of school vouchers is a hot button issue that both sides struggle to compromise on, however; I think we can all agree that Elon Musk, or any wealthy parent, should not be able to send their kids to private school on Hoosier taxpayer dime and that schools receiving vouchers should not be able to increase their tuition for kids who fall under the poverty line. Let’s begin there.
