Attorney General’s Office Animal Law Unit Director Michelle Welch and veterinarian Dr. Moffitt shared valuable expertise on investigative techniques and the critical role veterinary partnerships play in these cases.

UPDATE 5/30: Mr. Williams has been located safe. Thank you for sharing!

MISSING ADULT: 38-year-old Daniel Grey Williams was last seen on May 25, 2026.

He is believed to be driving a white 1991 Toyota T100 pickup truck with North Carolina plate HKW-3583.

He is described as a white male, 6’1”, 180 lbs, with blue eyes, brown hair, and tattoos of a a flower and treasure chest on his left shoulder, and a flower and ship on his left arm.

He has a medical history that may affect his well-being, and investigators are concerned for his safety.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Roanoke Police Department by calling 911 or 540-344-8500.

TRAFFIC ALERT: The traffic lights at the intersection of Williamson Road and Orange Avenue NE are currently down and traffic is being rerouted as crews work to address the issue. At this time, Orange Avenue will remain open and Williamson Road will be rerouted via Courtland Avenue. Please exercise caution at this intersection or use an alternative route.

Today we celebrated the promotion of Kevin L. Slough as the new deputy director of police administration.

The deputy director coordinates and supervises the Police Department’s fiscal functions and administrative units. Responsibilities include developing budget documents, ensuring compliance with existing budgets, managing contracts with outside agencies, and overseeing grant administration.

This role also coordinates and supervises administrative professional staff functions within the Police Business Division, including the Records Unit, police business manager, quartermaster, equipment and supplies, building maintenance, fleet management and information technology.

Slough graduated from Ferrum College in May 1997 with a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice and recreation and leisure studies. He began his law enforcement career with the Roanoke County Police Department in March 1997, serving as a police officer, detective, sergeant, and commander before retiring in Spring 2025.

On April 29, 2025, Slough joined the Roanoke Police Department as police business manager. He begins his new role as deputy director on May 26, 2026.

“After a nationwide search, we are proud to promote from within and recognize Kevin Slough’s decades of leadership, experience and dedication to public service,” Chief Booth said. “Kevin has already made a significant impact in his role as police business manager, and his extensive background in law enforcement administration, budgeting and operational leadership makes him exceptionally well-qualified for this position. SHOOTING INVESTIGATION: On May 26, 2026, at approximately 6:16 p.m., officers responded to the 3000 block of Ferncliff Avenue NW for the report of a shooting. Police learned that two men with gunshot wounds were being transported by personal vehicles to local hospitals. Both are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation determined the shooting occurred outside of a gas station in the 2600 block of Cove Road NW.

This investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Roanoke Police Department at 540-344-8500.

UPDATE: RPD Arrests Man After Fatal Crash in Northwest

Members of the Roanoke Police Department Major Crash Team arrested a man for involuntary manslaughter and felony hit and run after a fatal crash on Memorial Day.

On May 25, 2026, at approximately 11:23 a.m., officers responded to the intersection of Lafayette Boulevard and Melrose Avenue NW for the report of a two-vehicle crash. Upon arrival, they located a Chevy Equinox unoccupied and two people inside a Honda Civic with injuries, both were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The driver of the Civic, later identified as 30-year-old Jose Saenz Ventura, of Roanoke, died from his injuries. The passenger received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver and the passenger of the Equinox ran from the scene and were located a short time later in the 900 block of Crescent Street NW. The driver, 42-year-old Kenneth Lynn Campbell Jr. of Roanoke, was arrested and charged with felony hit and run and involuntary manslaughter.

The initial investigation determined the Honda Civic was driving south on Lafayette Boulevard NW with the green light to turn left onto eastbound Melrose Avenue NW. The Chevy Equinox was driving west on Melrose and ran the red light, striking the Civic.

MAJOR CRASH INVESTIGATION: Officers are currently at the scene of a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Lafayette Boulevard and Melrose Avenue NW. The driver of one of the vehicles has been taken to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries, and the passenger has non-life-threatening injuries. The driver and occupant of the other vehicle ran from the scene but were located nearby. The investigation is ongoing.

Melrose Avenue NW is closed between Forest Park and 24th Street. Southbound Lafayette Boulevard and Crescent Road are both closed at Staunton Avenue.

Please use Salem Turnpike as the alternative route.

UPDATE 5/23: RPD Locates and Arrests Driver After Officer-Involved Shooting

Members of the Roanoke Police Department located the wanted man involved in a police shooting early Saturday morning.

On Sunday, May 24, 2026, at approximately 11:29 a.m., officers responded to the 1600 block of Wayne Street NE for the report of 43-year-old Larry Ranson Cooper, of no fixed address, being in the area.

Upon arrival, they located Mr. Cooper with non-life-threatening gunshot wound injuries. He was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for treatment.
