Great information if you use a generator during a power outage in the home.
GENERATOR SAFETY
In the event you lose power at your house and need to use a portable generator, Horry County Fire Rescue urges you to do so as safely as possible.
Generators can be extremely helpful in bridging the gap between having access to electricity, but also present fire and safety risks.
REMEMBER:
o NEVER use a generator inside a residence, garage or any kind of structure, even with an open door.
o NEVER use a generator if it's been damaged or is in a state of disrepair.
o ONLY use generators in well ventilated areas, away from open doors and windows. Exhaust fumes from generators can be deadly.
o ALWAYS have working and tested carbon monoxide (CO) alarms in your house. CO deaths rise as generator sales increase.
o ALWAYS turn off generators, and let them cool down, before refueling.
o ALWAYS store fuel containers (well labeled!) in a safe place, away from anything that could catch fire.
o ALWAYS use generators precisely to the manufacturer's recommendations.
