• A petition of Network Towers II to get a special use permit to construct a cell tower near the Montgomery County line off of I-81

During today’s Board of Supervisors meeting, county administration recognized Jennifer Chitwood for her service to Roanoke County. Jennifer is the Infrastructure Services Manager for Information Technology and has worked for the county for 25 years. Recently, she has taken the lead on several projects including managing the county cell phone process and suggesting changes to the county plan that could result in a savings of $50,000 annually.

Commissioners of the Revenue from across the Commonwealth are taking a stand against food insecurity in the Commissioners & Cans Food and Fund Drive. Roanoke County’s Commissioner of the Revenue Jason Peters is leading his office’s donation efforts this year.

The most needed non-perishable items are canned meats such as tuna, chicken, or ham; canned vegetables and fruits (low sugar); peanut butter and jelly; macaroni and cheese; hearty and meaty soups like beef stew or chili; pasta and sauces; boxed cereal and oatmeal; and condiments and spices.

All contributions will go to our local Feeding Southwest Virginia food bank. If you’re interested in participating, drop-offs are accepted at Roanoke County Administration Center at 5204 Bernard Drive, Roanoke, Virginia 24018. Roanoke County Public Schools teachers, administrators and staff gathered today for a convocation to kick off the school year. New superintendent Dr. Jamie Soltis shared personal stories about his journey in education, overcoming adversity, and the importance of making an impact on those we serve. The event culminated in the linking of carabiners to symbolize staff unity behind this important mission.

Our Public Safety Departments celebrated National Night Out this week at the Vinton Farmer’s Market.

National Night Out is a chance for the community to interact with law enforcement agencies and emergency personnel in a positive environment to build relationships.

Throughout the year our public safety organizations team up with internal and external agencies for community events including Egg-Stravaganza, Cuts with Cops and Trunk-or-Treat. These events allow our citizens to connect with emergency personnel outside of crisis events.

Many departments, like the Public Library and Department of Social Services, also participate in these events, making it even easier to share and access county resources.

Thank you to everyone who came to National Night Out to build this strong community!
