This project replaced undersized 2-inch galvanized steel pipe🛠️, pre-1930's cast iron pipe, and newer cast iron piping with known issues for a total replacement of approximately 36,400 ft. (nearly 7 miles).

These updates will offer improved distribution water flows💦, reduction of water service disruption by replacing old lines and valves, more fire hydrants 🚒 for this area, and replacement of service lines💧 to customers' meters.

As dry conditions have continued, Smith Mountain Lake water levels have fallen below 791.5 feet. As a result, Bedford Water is asking its customers to voluntarily conserve water.

As Western Virginia Water Authority customers in the Westlake Area are served by the Smith Mountain Lake Water Treatment Plant, we are asking our customers in that area to support this effort. To see the Bedford Water Drought Response and Water Conservation Plan or to learn water-wise tips, please visit brwa.com.

The Authority's Drought Contingency Plan is based on the water level in Carvins Cove Reservoir. Based on that established plan, our service area is not under Voluntary Water Conservation at this time. However, we always encourage all our customers to use water wisely. The historic Snow Steam Pump at Crystal Spring will open for free weekend tours beginning May 30 and ending Sept 6.

Tour hours:

You may have noticed that water levels at Carvins Cove are responding to the drought we are experiencing. Even with the water level 11.5ft low, we currently have 500 days of storage capacity (assuming we get no rain in the foreseeable future).

🤔What does this mean?

Reservoir storage is one of four indicators that the State looks at when assessing drought. In the state's assessment, reservoir storage greater than 120 days represents normal conditions, 90 to 120 days represents watch conditions, 60 to 90 days represents warning conditions, and less than 60 days represents emergency conditions. With decades of data on our reservoirs, we predict it will rain again. ☔️

Reservoir Levels are posted daily on our website, pinned as a news item on our homepage.

The Roanoke Valley’s reservoirs are still holding about five times what the state considers to be “normal” — meaning the region is far from any kind of emergency measures.
