Recent severe weather had a noticeable impact on our call volume this week, with Public Works dispatches nearly doubling compared to the previous week.

Many of these calls involved downed trees, and requests for barricades to help keep roadways safe and passable.

When severe weather hits, it takes a community-wide effort to respond. Our dispatchers are always working behind the scenes to make sure the right resources get where they’re needed. 🚧🌳

Today presents another risk of severe thunderstorms with damaging wind gusts and localized flash flooding. An isolated tornado is possible in southeast West Virginia this afternoon. A Flood Watch is also in effect through Thursday morning along and west of the Blue Ridge.

Stay weather aware, Roanoke!

4:30p radar update shows severe weather moving through parts of the region. A new Severe Thunderstorm Warning was just issued for Lynchburg and also for Appomattox, Campbell, Bedford, Amherst, and northern parts of Pittsylvania Co. until 5:45p. But we also have warnings in effect for parts of the Roanoke Valley and points north too. These storms are moving SE at 30-40 mph, so they are moving fairly quickly. Main threats include 60 mph wind gusts, small hail, heavy rain (localized flooding possible, and lots of thunder/lightning.
