Statewide Fire Alert

Statewide Fire Alert

📢With worsening drought conditions across the state and low relative humidity, State Forester Rick Oates has issued a statewide Fire Alert effective immediately.

Over the past weekend, 50 wildfires burned more than 2,300 acres of forestland across the state. This includes a 500-acre wildfire in Mobile County, one for 412 acres in Coosa County, one for 382 acres in Choctaw County, one for 260 acres in Washington County, and another one for 105 acres in Escambia County.

In the last 30 days, 387 wildfires have burned approximately 15,850 acres of forestland across the state.

“With no measurable rain in sight, the continued extremely dry conditions create dangerous wildfire behavior,” said Oates. “These conditions create the potential for fires to escape easily and spread rapidly, taking longer and more of the agency’s firefighting resources to contain. Fast-moving wildfires not only destroy property and forests but also threaten the lives of citizens and endanger firefighters.”

This Fire Alert will remain in effect until rescinded by the State Forester, at least through Monday, April 20. Conditions will be reevaluated at that time. Permits for outdoor burning will be restricted only to Certified Prescribed Burn Managers. Anyone who burns a field, grassland, or woodland without a burn permit may be subject to prosecution for committing a Class B misdemeanor.

The Alabama Forestry Commission is the state agency committed to protecting Alabama’s invaluable forest assets and its citizens. To report a wildfire, call (800) 392-5679. For more information on the current wildfire situation in the state or any other forestry-related issues, contact your local AFC office or visit the agency website at www.forestry.alabama.gov

Training night at the station.

Members spent the evening working on hose deployment and deck gun operations to stay sharp and ready for when the call comes in. Regular training helps ensure we can operate safely and effectively on the fireground.

We appreciate the dedication of our volunteers who take the time to train and serve our community.

The crew here at the fire department works hard for our community every day.

Our job isn’t just responding to structure fires or motor vehicle accidents — it’s about being there for our neighbors whenever they need a helping hand.

Recently, one of our elderly community members reached out to the station needing a ride after the passing of his wife. He had an important appointment but no way to get there. Jeff Whaley didn’t hesitate — he stepped up and made sure it happened.

Our crew has helped cut and deliver firewood during the cold snaps, and now we were able to help carry a neighbor across the bay to get to where he needed to be.

That’s what community is all about — neighbors helping neighbors.

Next time you see one of the men or women of the Styx Volunteer Fire Department, throw a hand in the air and give them a wave. We’re proud to serve such a great community. 🚒

Our center would like to extend our deepest gratitude to a remarkable group of individuals who stepped up for us when we needed it most. These heroes in the first responder world were kind enough to support our center so we could say goodbye to our friend and mentor, Tammy Campbell.

These headset heroes came from Mobile County Fire & EMS, Pike County 911, Magnolia Springs Fire, Styx River Fire, Spanish Fort Police Department, Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, some are former Baldwin County 9-1-1 employees or are part time team members.

What makes the first responder community so special is the unspoken camaraderie and brotherhood that exists among us. When one of our own needs support, others step forward without hesitation — not because they have to, but because that is who they are.

We could not have said goodbye or supported our sister’s family without the help of each one of you, and we will forever be indebted to you for your selflessness and compassion.

We cannot thank you enough — Kaylan, Michael, Cole, Cherie, Eric, Shani, Samantha, Robbie, Alexander, and Isabella. You not only represented your agencies with excellence, but also ours. Each of you will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

Last but certainly not least, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to CJ with the Loxley Police Department and Brad with Medstar. These two individuals took the reins to plan and orchestrate Ms. Tammy’s funeral procession for our agency. In the first responder world, family is not defined by blood — it is defined by service, sacrifice, and standing shoulder to shoulder in the hardest moments. When one of our own hurts, we all show up. Anything Ms. Tammy’s family or our team needed, they were there without hesitation and ensured it was handled. That is how our first responder family works — united, loyal, and unwavering in support of one another. Brad and CJ, thank you. We appreciate you both more than you know.

We could not be prouder of the dedication, professionalism, and heart poured into this celebration of life.

Tammy would be proud. Thank you to all of our Center’s heroes!

We are heartbroken by the passing of Tammy, a dedicated Baldwin County 911 dispatcher who faithfully served our community for many years.

Tammy was so often the calm, steady voice on the other end of the line during someone’s worst moments. Behind every dispatch was her professionalism, focus, and unwavering commitment to making sure responders had the information they needed to do their jobs safely and effectively. Her role may have been behind the scenes, but her impact was felt on every call.

We are incredibly grateful for her years of service and the care she showed to both the public and first responders alike.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Tammy’s family, her friends, and her Baldwin County 911 family during this difficult time.

Rest easy, Tammy. Thank you for your service and for the difference you made in our community.

đźš’ Community Safety Reminder from Styx River Volunteer Fire Department đźš’

In the last 27 hours, our volunteers have responded to 12 emergency calls.
Over the past 9 days alone, we’ve handled 22 calls — many of them due to controlled burns getting out of control.

With dry conditions and windy weather, fires can spread faster than expected. We’re asking everyone to please use extra caution if you plan to burn.

🔥 Before you burn, please remember:
• Check the weather — windy days are not burn days
• Always have water, hoses, or other fire suppression tools on hand
• Never leave a fire unattended
• Keep burns small and manageable
• Fully extinguish the fire before leaving the area

Our volunteers are proud to serve this community, but many of these calls are preventable. Let’s work together to keep our neighbors, homes, and first responders safe.

If in doubt — don’t burn. Stay safe, Styx River ❤️
