At around 1915 hours tomorrow Unity point St. Luke's LifeGuard Air Ambulance will visit Robins Fire for training. Flight crews provide this training for area fire departments to prepare them for safe operations around the aircraft and to help select landing sites, as well as provide ground intelligence to increase safety of all crews involved in emergencies where aeromedical transport will be used. The aircraft is planned to land at city hall and depart the city after training is completed. This is just one more way your Robins Firefighters train with our partners to assure we can provide a seamlessly integrated response anytime anywhere.

Tonight’s training focused on ground ladders. Fire doubles in size every 60 seconds. Our crews practiced throwing 1 and 2 man ladder throws, placement raising and lowering in under 3 minutes. When you have 20 crews and all the time then use it, when you have limited crew and an emergent need, be able to solve that problem quickly and safely.

Did you know that Robins Fire has 3 Paramedics, 2 Advanced practice EMTs, 7 Basic EMTs, 2 EMRs, and 6 CPR providers on it's roster? 14 of our 20 staff are certified with the state of Iowa Department of Health and Human Services to provide Emergency Medical Care when 911 is called. What does that mean? Robins Fire brings high level care and critical life saving medications to those in need. We hope you never need it but if you do we are here.

“In your best Steve Irwin voice” Here we see some of our Technical rescue team members practicing 3-1 mechanical advantage or “Zrig” set up and using a pick prusic and winch from our UTV to haul. This is one of dozens of ways we can lift and lower providers and patients in remote areas to safety. Places where ladder trucks can’t go. Our crews train to solve problems and assemble rigging to fit the condition. We utilized the Iowa Fire Service Training Bureau’s tower prop that the state provides free for departments to train with.

It is with deepest sadness that Robins Fire mourns the loss of one its own. Firefighter/EMT Stephen Homburg lost his fight with cancer last Saturday. Firefighters from Robins went to salute his departure from the hospice house at that time. Stephen’s last page has been answered he now returns to quarters for the final time.
Stephen served nearly his whole life as a firefighter EMT in TX, AZ and WI before arriving to Robins and serving the last 3 years. Stephen enjoyed his time with RFD even assuming the duties of driver of the Santa tour and falling in love immediately with that widely loved activity before falling ill and beginning the fight of his life. Stephen fought valiantly his memory will be honored by the firefighters he served with. Dispatch…Firefighter / EMT #97 10-42 for the final time. What are those guys and gals doing now? On Monday night our crews broke into teams and practiced drafting (pulling water from a static supply, jet siphoning ( moving water between static containers, master streams ( large bore water delivery when exposure protection is needed or massive cooling) connecting to hydrants and control panel ops moving between water supplies and tank reserve to maintain the safety supply. The goal was to practice things we don’t do everyday and get water to the nozzle in 60 seconds. Fire doubles in size every minute and this is how we make those minutes count.

With the approach of the nation's birthday, your Firefighters, EMTs and Paramedics are here to offer some holiday advice to surviving the 4th of July with all 10 fingers. It only requires a special blend of caution and common sense and we think you'll do fine.
1. Intoxicants and explosives do not mix, unless you'd like to meet your EMS providers and see the inside of an Area Ambulance Service rig, it's best to leave the ignition to a sober adult. Impairment and incendiary predilictions seem to be directly correlated to our dismay.
2. Light only one firework at a time. A chaotic sprint to safety isn't the fun you think it is.
3. Have an ample water supply handy. Fireworks burn hot, and fire spreads quickly. An unexploded firework is not a test of courage, it should be doused in water and soaked for 20 minutes.
4. Spent sparklers have burnt down homes. (we've been there) These burn hot enough to burn metal. Think light saber not wand. Your plastic bucket or trash can are not a match for that kind of heat.
5. If it launches into the sky using what can only be described as a mortar, it wasn't meant for your backyard. It's very likely you'll end up in an awkward conversation in the morning with your neighbor.
6. Newton's Law of universal gravitation: As an object rises, the Earth's gravity slows it's rise until the upward velocity reaches zero. Then the object accelerates back to the Earth. Frequently not where it started. Be mindful of blazing debris returning to your neighbor's roof.
7. In case of emergency, call 911. Trust us the 911 dispatchers will not be surprised.

Tonight Robins Fire EMTs and Paramedics participated in cutting edge simulations utilizing the Simulation in Motion-IA mobile skills lab. This grant funded training allows our crews to experience critical patients in a controlled setting and practice interventions to assure our EMTs and Paramedics have the sharpest skill sets.
