Once a Rockette, Always a Rockette

Once a Rockette, Always a Rockette Robinson Rockettes Drill Team Alumni page The Rockettes Drill Team was created in the Spring of 1971 with 32 members selected to the team.

The girls made their first appearance at halftime of the first RHS home football game. They also performed at several pep rallies. Along with the band, the group presented a pre-game show for the last Dallas Cowboys game played in the Cotton Bowl. The girls marched in the HOT Rodeo and Baylor Homecoming parades and presented halftime shows at the Regional basketball games in Denton. The current Ro

ckettes Drill Team continues to perform at halftime of the football games and at pep rallies. They also march in the Veteran's Day and Baylor Homecoming parades. During the Spring, they attend local and State competitions, perform at "Rockette Revue" and end the year with a banquet.

2011-12 Rockettes
The 21 members of the Rockettes Drill Team were on a roll this year. Not having an off season means practice, hard work, and dedication year round. These talented ladies do it all; from performing at pep rallies, varsity football and basketball games, to marching in parades, competing at multiple competitions, and supporting Robinson. Rachel Barker, 3 year dance instructor said this team is the best team I've had so far." However, Mrs. Barker can't do everything herself, and for that she has officers. Three fantastic dancers were chosen as the 2011-2012 officers for the Robinson High School Drill Team; Lieutenant Shayna Bettinger, Captain Morgan Van Meter, and Captain Mackenzie Williams. Drill Team had great halftime performances and some spirit boosting pep rally performances. So after months and months of learning dances and practicing routines, some would assume the Rockettes were done until next year, right? Well that's not the case. "We don't just dance at the football games. We dance all year long. We go to competitions and do way more stuff, "Chesley Chapman said. Needless to say it was an impressive and fun year for the Rockettes.

2010-11 Rockettes
The Rockettes Drill Team is made up of 15 talented young dancers. This year's team consisted of mostly freshmen and juniors with the exception of the captain, Senior Hailey Nix. Going to competitions and football games gave the team a big opportunity to meet new
people and make new friends.
The Rockettes performed at half-time shows during football season and also participated in dance competitions. They have traveled to such places as Grapevine and Belton to compete. The Rockettes performed well at both events and received a sweepstakes and high point award for their Novelty routine.
Despite the changes in this year's program with sponsor Mrs. Barker-out-on maternity leave, the girls came through. "We had a lot of fun and we learned so much. It brought us closer and taught us what it means to be a team," said co-sponsor, Mrs. Greenway.

2009-10 Rockettes
Things were a little different for the 13 members of the Drill Team because Mrs. Rachel Barker was the new sponsor. Even though this is her first year, she says she loves the girls like she has had the position for years. Her best memory of the year was the game against Groesbeck for homecoming as she got to watch the girls do a full out high kick routine in the mud. The drill team won many awards at the various competitions including two sweepstakes awards, two Gussie Nell Davis awards, three Judges awards, two Overall Presentation awards, one Best Choreography award, and one Solo Finalist by Captain Hailey Nix.

2008-09 Rockettes
You might be on the Rockettes Drill Team if you sparkle and shine at Friday night football games. Glitter, make-up,pom-poms and dancing boots; this is the life of a Heart of the Blue Rockette Drill Team member. Holding your breath, waiting for the band to start up, infinite eyes glued on you, waiting to see what the Heart of the Blue is all about...nerves tensed, spotlight bright, last minute run-throughs keeping your mind on the routine, and then the moment begins where you pour your everything into drills committed to memory and skill. Music echoes in your ears tapping out the counts to each move. The crowd goes wild at the end of the dance. Fans stand to clap along with the Robinson Fight Song as the drill team dances and taps pom-poms in tradition. Tradition is what leads us. Tradition makes us a Rockette.
This year the drill was under the direction of Ms. Amanda Turpen (Cooper). The team went to competitions, danced at Friday night football games, performed in pep rallies, and helped cheer on the fans at games. The Heart of the Blue competed at MCC where they received a division one trophy, and also the Heart of Texas Dance Spectacular. The drill team hosts a boot camp generating interest in younger dancers. In the spring, they host Rockette R***e where they perform. Senior Captain Amanda Veselka said, "I've been a drill team member all through high school. we are a close knit bunch and I really think we will be friends forever."

2007-08 Rockettes
All eyes are on you. Your adrenaline is pumping and your heart is racing. You put on a big smile and go over the performance step-by-step in your head. The music starts to play and you go into your first combination. You are a Rockette!
Being one of the 21 drill team members doesn't just mean that you perform at the halftime for varsity football games, it also means that you have a passion for dancing and a love of performing. And with a director like Cynthia McCoy, it's not that hard to have a great time during practices and performances.
McCoy celebrated her 200th halftime performance on October 26. "I've really loved it over the years, and all of the girls I've had have been great; this is something I'll never forget," McCoy said. "The drill team has done an amazing job of making their strenuous performances look natural and flawless," said Principal Tim VanCleave. "They always represent our school with pride."
In March the drill team made its way to San Marcos for competition. One of the best parts of the trip was having parents and family members from 20 of the dancers to support the girls and our program. After competition season, the girls continued dancing at various events and Rockette R***e.

2006-07
The Rockettes Drill Team was back up to 23 members and ready to carry on the traditions of the teams before them. Unfortunately, the yearbook only carried 2 pictures and a half page spread of the girls. While they named all the girls pictured, the yearbook staff did not elaborate on the activities of the drill team. If any former 06-07 team members can elaborate on activities and events, competitions and special memories, I welcome posts, comments or pictures to help fill in the gaps.

2005-06 Rockettes
This year rated exemplary in regards to the RHS Drill Team. With a total of 6 new members and 9 from last year, Mrs. McCoy returned for the first time since the 03-04 school year to lead the team. And what a team they made!
Besides providing entertainment and support for the Robinson fans and students, the drill team also found a way to excel at all the competitions they entered. Temple - won! Galveston - won! No matter where they went, the drill team excited the crowd. People take notice of these special girls because they are fun to watch; but more importantly they are skilled and dedicated dancers who are always there to support the Rockets in all endeavors.

2004-05 Rockettes
The drill team went through a transition year with new director, Sarah Schaeffer. With new uniforms also, the Rockettes continued to provide entertaining halftime performances. The team went to two competitions that year and were successful at both. The first competition was in January at the MCC Highlands gym where they received Division One on all of their dances. The next competition in March was bigger with lots more teams in San Antonio. Again, they received all Division One ratings and won sweepstakes. Out of all teams there, they also received the Sportsmanship Award, chosen by all the directors at the competition.
