Big thanks to the Crawford County 4-H clubs that participated in the Savanna planting! 10 White Oaks (Quercus alba), 10 Northern Red Oaks (Quercus rubes), and 5 Bur Oaks (Quercus macrocarpa). These trees came from Forrest Keeling Nursery and is a partnership grant between the AISWCD Forestry Committee and the Illinois Extension 4-H. The Illinois Soil and Water Conservation Districts arranged this grant for public land and chose the Forest Preserve as their recipient.

An Oak Savanna is a crucial habitat to many species of animals that call our area home. They are made up of trees spaced out around 30 feet or more, which allows sunlight to reach the ground so native Forbes and grasses can thrive. If you would like to learn more about Oak Savanna’s, please feel free to reach out!

Pictured is the new culvert and a flash board riser. With the flash board riser, we can control the water level in the bottom as pictured. Right now, the boards are set to maintain a 17” depth. This will create a wetland habitat and just maybe, some wood ducks will visit the area! Plans are to flood the bottoms late fall or early winter and hold some water through spring. Then, we will pull the boards and let the area dry out to regrow vegetation throughout the summer. If anyone is interested in learning more about water control structures or wetland habitat please, feel free to reach out!

Attention!!!
Please avoid the south end “rough trail” this morning. The culverts in the pond bottom are getting replaced! Please use caution and watch out for heavy machinery

The small blacktop loops on the east side is still open and the single track trails are open. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation and look forward to a new habitat to be created. Stay tuned for updates! Hope everyone enjoys this beautiful spring day and while you’re out today, keep an eye out for spring ephemerals popping up. The spring beauties and violets are in full swing
