What’s New?

With the increasing possibility of wind chills dropping into the mid teens to mid 20s across the northern portions of the region Sunday morning, the Extreme Cold Watch was upgraded to an Extreme Cold Warning for the northern half of the area.

Chances for icing Sunday morning have increased to around a medium chance (30-40%) across the northern half of the region. Consequently a winter storm watch has been issued for these areas.

A Freeze Watch will go into effect midnight Sunday and be in effect through noon Monday. Monday morning is still expected to be the coldest of the week.

Timing and Overview

Arctic air will move into South Texas Saturday night and remain in place through early next week. There will be a period of potential freezing rain late Saturday night into early Sunday morning, mainly in the Victoria Crossroads and northern Coastal Plains. Any accumulation will likely be around a Trace to 0.1 inches, although there is low chance for the area near Victoria to see accumulations greater than 0.1 inches. Freezing temperatures are expected each night from Saturday night through Monday night. Dangerously cold wind chill values will also accompany these temperatures. The coldest periods will likely be Sunday night into Monday morning and Monday night into Tuesday morning.

South Texas Hazards

Expected Accumulations

Ice: Up to one tenth of an inch in the Victoria Crossroads and northern Brush Country.

Temperatures:

Saturday night into Sunday morning: 26-37°F
Sunday afternoon: 38-52°F
Sunday night into Monday morning: 18-26°F
Monday afternoon: 37-47°F
Monday night into Tuesday morning: 16-32°F

Wind Chill:

Wind chills under 30°F will be widespread each night from Sunday night through Tuesday morning. Lowest wind chill values will drop as low as 5°F-20°F Monday morning.

South Texas Impacts

Freezing Rain:

A light glaze of ice may develop on vegetation and outdoor exposed infrastructure. Trace amounts of ice on overpasses/bridges are possible. Caution is advised on bridges and overpasses.

Wind Chill:

Dangerously cold wind chills could result in hypothermia and/or frostbite if precautions are not taken. More information to prevent and/or treat these conditions is available here.

Freeze:

Freezing temperatures may impact young, sensitive plants, pets, and outdoor irrigation systems.

Winter Storm Watch:

Travel is discouraged as many secondary and elevated roadway surfaces may become slick and dangerous, especially with ice accumulation. Exposed outdoor objects, including trees, utility lines, and vehicles may be covered in ice. Scattered power outages could last for several days.
