The Fall Workday was an opportunity for our members to get together and shape the way the cemetery looks. The grass got mowed and we took out many of the volunteer trees. Thanks to everyone that had time to join us!

We had an excellent day and a successful meeting of the membership today at the Simmons Saltillo Cemetery! Thank you for all those who joined us for our 130th year since our first family member was laid to rest.. Hopefully more of you can join us next year. As the city of Lincoln grows, we need more of our family to come and join us to protect what was placed here in our protection.

As a reminder, November 9th this year is our 395th year in America. We should really be doing TWO thanksgivings. One during the national holiday and the other when our ancestor [Moses Simmons (Symonson)] first came to this beautiful land. He came across on the Fortune which was the second English ship destined for Plymouth Colony in the New World, one year after the voyage of the Pilgrim ship Mayflower. They arrived on November 9th, 1621. Plymouth Colony was the first colony made of families in America. And like Moses, many of the colonists were escaping religious persecution.

So, lets be sure to celebrate that this year.

Henry Simmons and his wife Catherine Walker moved to Nebraska City in 1862 and then to Lancaster county In March, 1863, when the county numbered only a dozen or so voters. So, we celebrate 154 years in Nebraska this year.

The reason the family cemetery is named Simmons-Saltillo is because Saltillo was the location of the oldest post office west of the Missouri river on the old Pike’s peak trail.

All this is to say, please help us keep our proud heritage alive for our generation and our children's. Join us at the cemetery for our Memorial Day meeting, if you can. We would love to have your support as we get ready for Lincoln to reach our side of Rokeby road in about a year.
