Thank You, First Zion Church!

Recently, Pastor Daniel Won of First Zion Church of Hackensack stopped by Fire Headquarters to introduce himself and present a generous monetary donation to Hackensack IAFF Locals 2081 and 3172.

Their contribution will directly support the Hackensack Fire Widows and Orphans Fund, helping the families of those who have dedicated their lives to protecting our community.

Today, members of Hackensack IAFF Locals 2081 and 3172 took time out of their day to prioritize their health by participating in cancer screenings at Fire Headquarters.

April is Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Month — a reminder of how critical early screening can be, especially for firefighters. Due to repeated exposure to toxic smoke, carcinogens, and hazardous materials, firefighters face a significantly higher risk of occupational cancer. Early detection truly saves lives.
Screenings included:
• Skin, mouth, and lymph node evaluations
• Blood draws for cancer markers
• Ultrasound screenings of the thyroid, bladder, and testicles
• Low-dose CT lung scans (with prescription provided after initial screenings)
Members who complete the low-dose lung scan will also receive complimentary calcium scoring.

Thanks to ongoing efforts and legislation in New Jersey, all career firefighters are eligible for comprehensive cancer screenings every three years — ensuring those who protect our communities have access to the care they deserve.

Protecting those who protect us starts with prevention and early detection.

On Tuesday, April 7, 2026, Hackensack IAFF Locals 2081 and 3172 proudly hosted their annual retirement celebration at the Rochelle Park Knights of Columbus.

This year, we had the honor of recognizing three exceptional members for their years of dedicated service, surrounded by their families, friends, colleagues, and members of the city council.

Chief Anthony Riehl began his career in September 2000 and rose through the ranks over 25 years, ultimately serving as Chief of Department until his retirement on October 1, 2025.

Captain John Hynes, hired in February 1995, completed an incredible 30-year career, retiring on December 1, 2025, as Captain of Ladder 1, 4th Platoon. He also served as President of Hackensack Fire Officers IAFF Local 3172 and continues to serve the fire service and Union as the PFANJ 1st District Vice President.

Firefighter Al Cirelli, appointed in October 2000, retired on December 1, 2025, as a Fire Inspector in the Bureau of Fire Prevention. Throughout his career, Al also served as an arson investigator for the department and was a member of Firefighters IAFF Local 2081.

Congratulations to all three on your well-earned retirements. Thank you for your unwavering dedication, service, and commitment to Hackensack IAFF Locals 2081 and 3172, and to the City of Hackensack.

Your legacy will not be forgotten.
