Here's something many people don't realize: nonprofits need income to survive.

"Nonprofit" doesn't mean "no profit." It means every dollar we bring in goes back into our mission, not into anyone's pocket.
At RocDog, that income keeps therapy dog teams visiting the people who need them most, here in Rochester and beyond. No funding, no visits. It's that simple.

The healthiest nonprofits don't rely on just one source. They build a diversified funding base. Over the next few days, we'll walk you through ours.

Most of you reading this will never volunteer, never own a therapy dog, and never come to an event. You just read the posts, occasionally send one to somebody, and think well of us from a distance. That matters more than it sounds like it should. Half the people who eventually walk through our door arrived because someone forwarded them a post. So thank you for reading, and thank you for the forwarding — it is a genuinely useful thing to do and it costs you nothing.

If a post ever lands right, send it on.

Two weeks. November 7, Sweet Briar Lodge, 5–9 PM.

This is roughly the point where the room stops being a plan and starts being a headcount. If you are coming, now is a genuinely helpful time to say so.

Every polished visit photo you see on this page has about forty rejects behind it. Blinking. Mid-shake. Looking resolutely at something off camera. A tail across the lens. Here are some of ours. Post your own worst dog photo in the comments — the blurrier the better.

Picture the night, since it is close enough now to picture.

You arrive around 5:00. Coats off, drink in hand, the auction table already crowded. Dinner. The band starts, and it is original music, played well, and the room actually listens. Somebody wins the 50/50 and pretends to be casual about it. You leave a little after nine having had a good time and having funded part of a dog.

Fifteen days. https://caring-music-group-event.cheddarup.com

Memory care asks something specific of a dog and its handler. Conversation may not go anywhere. The same question may come four times. A resident may reach suddenly, or not at all. What works is a dog that stays settled through all of it and a handler who does not correct anyone. What we see, again and again, is a resident who has not spoken all morning putting a hand on a dog's head and saying its name — or telling you in complete detail about a collie they had in 1961. We do not measure these visits in minutes. We measure them in the moment a face changes.

Cannot make November 7? Genuinely fine. Here is the version of helping that does not require a Saturday night.

Give any amount online — it goes to the same $30,000. Donate an auction item or a raffle basket. Sponsor a seat for someone who wants to come and cannot swing a ticket. Or just share this post with the one person you know who would say yes.

None of that requires you to be in the room. All of it moves six families forward.

Half of every $5,000 sponsorship — $2,500 — is professional trainer hours. That is the line people are most surprised by, and it is the one we defend hardest. Volunteers can walk dogs, foster them, drive them, and love them. Volunteers cannot put twelve months of skilled, structured training into a dog that a family with a disabled member will depend on daily. That work is professional, it is paid, and cutting it is how programs produce dogs that fail in the home. We would rather fund fewer dogs properly than more dogs badly.
