Mount Hope Cemetery - Rochester

Mount Hope Cemetery - Rochester Mount Hope Cemetery is the final resting place of many of Rochester’s pioneers and leaders, and is Anthony and Frederick Douglass.
(221)

Mount Hope, as the nation’s first municipally-owned Victorian cemetery, is one of the most remarkable cemeteries in America. The dramatic topography formed by glacial forces provides its most striking character-giving features. The thousands of monuments and other man-made structures added since its opening in 1838 has resulted in a stunning 196-acre outdoor museum. Today, Mount Hope continues to

be an active cemetery as well as Rochester’s most unique and valued green space. Four seasons of splendor offers a peaceful oasis to Mount Hope visitors, as well as to the 350,000 permanent residents, who include Susan B. A sought after destination for photographers and history buffs, Mount Hope is listed in the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places as part of the local Mt. Hope/Highland Preservation District and the National Parks Services’ National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.

In his West India Emancipation speech delivered on August 3, 1857 in Canandaigua, New York, Frederick Douglass uttered one of his more famous quotes, "If there is no struggle, there is no progress".

Born into slavery in Maryland, Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) experienced the harsh realities of slavery first hand. At the age of 20, he escaped slavery settling in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Throughout his life, he was a vocal proponent for equal rights, believing that liberty and justice should apply to all people, regardless of race or gender. He was an abolitionist, orator, author, and statesman - allowing him influence to advocate for the rights of formerly enslaved people and African Americans. He passed away in February 20, 1895, leaving behind a legacy that has had a profound impact in American Society. His burial location is in Section T, Lot 26.

Born in Adams, Massachusetts, she was raised to believe in equality and social justice. Her family moved to Rochester, NY in 1845 where her social circle included Frederick Douglas and journalist William Lloyd Garrison. In 1969, Anthony founded the National Woman Suffrage Association in 1869 along with Elizabeth Cady Stanton, headquartered in New York City, and continued to tirelessly work to support a woman’s right to vote until her death in 1906. William Caesar Warfield (January 22, 1920 - August 25, 2002) was known as one of the great vocalists of our time. Born in West Helena, Arkansas, his family moved to Rochester, New York while he was a small child for better education and employment opportunities. He started in music and singing at a young age, eventually becoming a talented soloist in high school. In his senior high school year, he won the National Music Educators League Competition with a full scholarship to any American music school of his choice- he chose the Eastman School of Music. He graduate with his bachelors in 1942, served overseas in the US Army for four years then returned to the Eastman School of Music for his graduate studies.

He spent the next several years signing in multiple venues. In 1950 he was invited by the Australian Broadcasting Commission to do a tour for 35 concerts from June to September which included solo performances with the leading symphony orchestras. When he returned to the US that year, he played Joe in the musical Showboat. His more famous role came when he played Porgy in George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. He was married to Leontyne Price, a classical singer, from 1952 to 1972. Throughout his career he had to endure racial discrimination, closed doors, and limited opportunities for an African American male opera singer. He pushed past these obstacles and is known worldwide as a soloist, recitalist, actor, activist, a signing ambassador for the U.S. and received numerous honorary doctorates and awards.
His grave site can be found in Section AA, Lot 2.
