Admittedly, I was a little shocked when I saw the "before" pictures as I was uploading them. I mean, what were we thinking? Besides the house, the land looks completely different. From our first foray into the bramble and vine infested woods so that we could imagine what the land could look like, to actually seeing our vision become reality, I'm still amazed.

The last of our inside projects are completed! It's been a busy 6 weeks refinishing the rest of the floors (minus two rooms, which will be done at some point in the future). I'm sure I mentioned this before, but when we purchased the home, it was still fully furnished and full of the prior owner's "stuff." Lots of stuff. More stuff than we ever could have imagined! The first set of pictures show parts of the living room prior to the previous owners. The next set of pictures show what we purchased, furniture and all. The rest of the pictures show the bar area, living room, front entry and new stair case. You'll definitely want to read the picture captions for details about each photo.
What you'll notice about the staircase and entry is probably the biggest change to the interior of the home. Initially, the staircase came down into the middle of the living room, creating an awkward back hallway and limiting natural light from the back windows. Additionally, there were two small entrances that led off the main entry- one to the back hallway, and one to the living room. Overall, this space was dark felt cramped. We reversed the direction of the staircase so that it came down into the entry way. We eliminated the back hallway by leaving the staircase open underneath. This brought in much needed light, but did eliminate our inside access to the basement. Our solution to this problem was a boat hatch in the floor under stairs. Additionally, we opened up the entry way to the living room, creating a more open floor plan and improving the flow from the kitchen/entry into the living room. And my favorite part about this whole section of the house is the use of the original doors- can you spot them? Jon also made us a mantel for the fireplace from live edge locally milled wood. And lastly, the floors were refinished, which further lightened up the space.

This bathroom, now that I'm going back through the pictures, was also horrible! This was originally the guest bath, but we made it our Master bath. Again, outside was practically inside, with exposure through the walls and ceiling, and you could see right through the floor to downstairs! Damage to this bathroom was from a pipe bursting due to a boiler failure and then raccoons finding their way inside. Notice that there was no bathroom sink either! Repairs to this room consisted of a new floor, removal and replacement of the rotten wood, new sheet rock, new windows, new sink, toilet and shower, and finally a fresh coat of paint. We left the old, exposed wood behind the sink to maintain the rustic feel. Jon gets a lot of credit for the sink, toilet and shower install- nothing is easy in this house of unlevel floors!

Today's post shows one of the biggest transformations to the house. This is the one room that truly had us worried when we bought the house in 2022 and thankfully was one of the first issues tackled. (Thank you Peter)The laundry room and bathroom were in place when we bought the house, but racoon damage to the roof combined with a poorly designed "join" between the house and the garage left the house with a gaping wound, surrounded by rotting, moldy wood and drywall.
To repair the room, first, all the moldy and rotten material had to be removed the bathroom and laundry area gutted. Then the pitch to the roof where the join existed needed to be increased for proper water drainage. The wall between the garage and the laundry room needed to be rebuilt, followed by new insulation, new window, new bathroom fixtures, new drywall and new floor.

The Dining Room! This is probably my favorite rehab room. We painted the walls a rich blue and the wainscoting and trim a bright white which made for a dramatic yet classic look. The light fixtures were picked to add a touch of a modern look while keeping a farmhouse feel. And the floors! Who knew what beautiful wood was hiding under the dark stained floors.

First up is the Kitchen! We were only able to find one picture from the kitchen before the previous owner's renovated in the 1980's . We kept the general layout (didn't want to move appliances and all the hassle of reworking electric/plumbing etc.) but did need to add outlets and we got rid of the indoor gas grill in the island. New flooring, new custom cabinets and counters, and a new island. My favorite part of the kitchen is the counters- beautiful granite with a leathered finish kept the rustic look!

It's been a while since we posted anything about the house renovation! We've been working on the land now that the winter is over but the interior is DONE!

Keep following as we post each room's before and after pics!
