In the wake of our successful campaign, we’re reminded more than ever—there’s absolutely no way we could have come so far alone. To everyone who showed up to knock doors and call voters, we cannot thank you enough…but we’re going to try!

When we launched the People’s Slate in 2021, amidst a historic uprising in our city, we dedicated ourselves to bringing working-class issues “from the streets, to the seats” of City Hall. That’s what we’ve been working on since then. And together, that’s what we did again last night.

It’s no exaggeration to say we would not be standing here without your support. We want to thank each and every one of you for every door you knocked, every phone call you made, every dollar you gave. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

This is truly a win for our community: Stanley Martin won with the highest number of votes, Chiara Kee Kee Smith secured a seat on Council, and Kevin Stewart was the first runner-up, running an incredible race as a first-time candidate.

Last night, we not only voted the People’s candidates into City Council; we voted to reimagine our system of public safety, to create a new proactive structure grounded in care and compassion. We voted to refund Rochester’s social services, giving our community the resources we need to thrive. We voted for housing justice, ensuring protections for our tenants.

But, it doesn’t stop here—our power is in our people. That means we need you to cogovern with us and remain involved in the movement. This only works if we’re all in it together.

THANK YOU Rochester! We are honored to be in the fight with you. Now, let’s get to work!

Last night, at around 11:00 PM, Chiara "Kee Kee" Smith was elected to her first term as a Rochester City Council Member! Here's her statement on her victory:

I am shocked and humbled by the outpouring of support from Rochester’s voters, and completely full of gratitude for everyone who helped make this victory possible—I sure know I couldn’t have done it on my own.

First, I’d like to thank God and my community, both of whom showed up for me in a major way throughout this campaign, uplifting me during moments of doubt and pushing me to give my best effort through this marathon of a race.

I am also grateful to my family, especially my grandmother, for all of the love and support she showed me throughout this campaign.

I was lucky enough to earn endorsements from DSA, WFP, and the Vocal NY Action Fund—thank you to all of these organizations for seeing the potential of my campaign and aligning yourselves with my cause. Your support was integral to our success and I will be forever grateful for your choosing to show up with me.

Finally, to all of the volunteers that make up The People’s Slate, it’s been an honor and a joy to walk this path with you. Each of you was an essential part in the victory we won last night, but I’d like to give a special thanks to Amanda and Ashley—your guidance and leadership and refusal to let anything slip through the cracks is both humbling and inspiring.

To Stanley and Kevin, I feel so lucky that I was able to have you as companions in this effort. We pushed each other and supported each other throughout the entire campaign, and words cannot express how proud and grateful I am to have gotten to run with you.

This campaign may be over, but the work is just beginning—I’m ready and excited to get to work for my community, my neighbors, and those in Rochester who need me most.

The people united, will never be defeated!!!

Thank you for your endless love and support Rochester! Thank you Kevin Stewart and our newest Councilmember Chiara KeeKee Smith, for being guiding lights and leading with love and integrity; I’m humbled to run alongside you. 💛

Our campaign was a 100% grassroots, volunteer-ran operation. I am so grateful to my team, who ran a bold campaign focused on working-class issues and uniting our neighbors. Thank you to all of the organizations who supported our vision for a city where resources are invested in our people, not carceral institutions and private monopolies—The People’s Slate, Roc DSA , VOCAL Action Fund, 1199 SEIU, Workers United, LPAC, LGBTQ+ Victory Fund, Citizen Action, NYWFP, and NYPAN.

I’m deeply honored to continue serving as your City Councilmember. At the outset of my first campaign, I made a commitment to leading with the principles of collaborative governance, abolition and socialism. I am so proud to have upheld these values, and remain committed to being a fierce, relentless advocate for our neighbors.

Today’s the day, folks: the moment we’ve been building toward since we kicked this campaign off what seems like a million years ago…IT’S ELECTION DAY!

It’s the last weekend day before the election, so we’re having a rally and walk party to make sure we cross the finish line strong!
Join us at the Slate office (1150 University Ave Suite 8) today from noon to 12:30 for some inspiring speeches from our endorsing organizations and light refreshments. We’ll be staffing the office for phone banking and walk list pick up/drop off until 7:30 PM, so swing by anytime!
After getting hyped up and inspired, we’ll be hitting the streets all day long, taking advantage of one of our last chances to get the word out about Stanley, Kee Kee, and Kevin.

Our Get Out To Vote weekend kickoff party is today! Join us from 12:00 to 12:30 PM for some food and refreshments at the Slate office (1150 University Ave. Suite 8), then grab a walk list and hit the streets to knock doors on the last Saturday before election day. We’ll be staffing the office for a phone bank and walk list pick up and drop off until 5:30, so swing by any time to grab a list and make some calls!

We cannot stress enough how important your support is this weekend when we’re so close to the finish line. The finish line is within sight, but we need all hands on deck to make sure we make it there.

Come for the food and refreshments; stay for the political revolution.

Election Day is this upcoming Tuesday, June 24! That means WE HAVE ONE WEEKEND LEFT to spread the word to Rochester voters that Stanley, Kee Kee, and Kevin are our city’s best bet for a brighter future.
We’ve got special events happening at the Slate office every day between now and Tuesday:
SATURDAY—Get Out To Vote Kickoff & Canvass Party, 12:00 to 12:30 PM. We’ll be at the office until 5:30 phone banking and taking walk lists.
SUNDAY—Get Out To Vote Rally and Walk, 12:00 to 12:30 PM. We’ll be at the office until 7:30 phone banking and taking walk lists.
MONDAY—All Day Phone Bank & Canvass, 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
TUESDAY—All Day Phone Bank & Canvass, 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Then, join us for a watch party at Marshall St. Bar and Grill starting at 9 PM!
