The Rochester City School District congratulates Board of Education President Cynthia Elliott for her appointment as Vice-Chairperson of the Conference of Big 5 School Districts.

The Conference of Big 5 School Districts is a membership organization representing New York State’s urban school systems, including the Buffalo, New York City, Rochester, Syracuse, Yonkers, Albany, Mount Vernon and Utica districts. Collectively, 46% of the State’s public school children are educated in these districts. The Conference of Big 5 School Districts has been advocating and promoting urban educational issues before federal, State and local entities since 1958.

President Elliott was first elected to the Rochester Board of Education in 2006. She has over 45 years of experience serving as a community activist and is dedicated to representing the economically and socially disadvantaged children and families of Rochester and across the State. She began her career at the age of 19 at the FIGHT organization, where she participated in voter registration drives, political campaigns, and various advocacy efforts.

President Elliott holds an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts from Monroe Community College, a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from St. John Fisher University, a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from SUNY Brockport, and a Master’s Degree in Human and Organizational Systems from Fielding Graduate University.

To celebrate the RCSD’s Summer of Discovery, the District is highlighting staff members who support our summer learning programming.

Ms. Jeanne Markman is the summer school principal for the Rochester Early College High School Smart Scholars program at School Without Walls. An Assistant Principal at Dr. Alice Holloway Young School of Excellence, Ms. Markman is overseeing students in grades 9 – 12 who are being provided an innovative educational opportunity that cultivates confident, college immersed, and globally competent scholars.

“It has been my pleasure working with students as they transition from middle to high school”, said Markman. “We are enaging with students working towards a Regents diploma and an associate’s degree from Monroe Community College in this unique partnership.”

Ms. Markman began her career in 2001 as a Special Education teacher at James Monroe Campus. She later served as an Assistant Principal at Monroe, Edison Career and Technology High School, School of the Arts, Joseph C. Wilson Magnet High School, and Virgil I. Grissom School No. 7.

To celebrate the RCSD’s Summer of Discovery, the District is highlighting staff members who support our summer learning programming.

Ms. Anna Madrid is the summer school principal for the Summer Language Academy at Anna Murray-Douglass School No.12. A Community Site Coordinator at Henry Hudson School No. 28, Ms. Madrid is overseeing 60 students in grades 6 – 12 who speak seven different languages and ranging in different levels of English proficiency.

“I have an excellent staff of ENL and bilingual certified teachers from various schools in the District with many years of experience in teaching English as a New Language,” said Madrid. “Students are learning language by studying geology, they participate in hands-on experiments and projects, and they have participated in two field trips connected to our unit of study along with reading and writing.”

A proud graduate of the Rochester City School District, Ms. Madrid started working at John James Audubon School No. 33 as a bilingual teacher in 2008 and has also been a bilingual teacher at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School No 9.

City of Rochester schools and the University of Rochester’s Memorial Art Gallery partner in an innovative arts integration program.

To celebrate the RCSD’s Summer of Discovery, the District is highlighting staff members who support our summer learning programming.

Ms. Megan Tice is the summer school principal for Mary McLeod Bethune School No. 45. Currently completing her administrative internship, Ms. Tice is enrolled in the University of Rochester’s Warner School of Education School Administrator certification program. She is overseeing 100 students this summer who have a unique opportunity to interact with staff.

“I believe in providing opportunities for children to extend their own learning and to apply their knowledge in authentic, real-world situations,” said Tice. “Some students have the opportunity this summer to work with their teachers for the next school year. This allows them to build relationships in order to set the 2022- 23 school year off right.”

Ms. Tice has been with the District since 2016 when she started her RCSD career as a speech-language pathologist at School No. 45. She also completed student teaching at Anna Murray-Douglass Academy School No. 12, and she is currently a soccer and lacrosse coach in the Webster Central School District.

To celebrate the RCSD’s Summer of Discovery, the District is highlighting staff members who support our summer learning programming.

Ms. Elizabeth Cross is the summer school principal for ROC Summer Arts at Anna Murray-Douglass School No.12. An Assistant Principal at Dr. Charles T. Lunsford School No 19, Ms. Cross is overseeing 350 students enrolled in a program that engages students in accelerated learning through multiple experiences in music, dance, visual and digital arts.

“ROC Summer Arts has given me the opportunity to work with students and staff from many schools across the District,” said Cross. “I have been able to continue my work around the importance of arts in education and how it supports students’ engagement, social-emotional well-being, and achievement in school.”

Ms. Cross has spent her entire career in the Rochester City School District. She started as a 1:1 paraprofessional at then Chester Dewey School No. 14, and she later became a classroom teacher at Virgil I. Grissom School No. 7 in 2005. Since then, she has been an intervention teacher and an instructional coach at The Children’s School of Rochester No. 15, Dr. Charles T. Lunsford School No. 19, and Adlai E. Stevenson School No. 29.
