The ROC Community Table stands in solidarity with United States Representative Joseph Morelle, Monroe County Executive Adam Bello, City of Rochester Mayor Malik Evans, and countless others to oppose the establishment of an immigration detention center in the Keating Federal Building or anywhere in Monroe County. Such facilities contribute to an atmosphere of fear and distrust that tears at the communal fabric of our neighborhoods and discourages residents from seeking essential services, participating in civic life, or feeling safe in the places they call home.

The Refugee Act of 1980 codified protections rooted in the painful lessons of history when thousands of refugees were denied safe haven. Those lessons must not be forgotten. We must not retreat from our responsibility to lead the world in refugee resettlement. We must not deny asylum seekers the right to have their claims heard and fairly adjudicated through due process. We must not accept an immigration system driven by anti-immigrant ideology. We must not permit enforcement practices that are legally questionable, morally abhorrent, and corrosive to public trust, civil rights, and human dignity.

The ROC Community Table calls upon local leaders and residents to reject policies rooted in fear and division and instead work toward solutions that uphold the values of compassion, fairness, and respect for all people. As a sanctuary city, we call upon local enforcement agents to protect the liberty, constitutional rights, and human dignity of Rochester residents from those who would enforce such legally questionable measures.
