Thank you to Highland Hospital for hosting Doula Day, a day to celebrate, learn, and connect around the importance of doula care. 💜

Doulas provide essential physical, emotional, and informational support to families before, during, and after birth. Thats why for years, I’ve been fighting to expand access to doula care across NY. Especially at a time when Black mothers and babies continue to face disproportionately high rates of complications.

We’ve made meaningful progress, but our work is far from done. I’ll keep fighting to invest in doulas, remove barriers to care, and make sure every NY family can access the support they deserve. Swipe through to see some of the progress we’ve made!

Breastfeeding provides important health benefits for both babies and mothers, yet Black families continue to face disparities in breastfeeding rates and access to support. Black Breastfeeding Week was created to shine a light on these disparities, as well as the cultural and systemic barriers that can make it harder for Black families to access the support they need. This week, we’re not only celebrating Black families and the advocacy that has advanced this work, we’re recommitting to a maternal healthcare system that centers dignity, access, and support for every family.

Yesterday, my office joined the Blocks in Bloom tour with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County. Since 2014, the program has helped more than 1,000 households across over 100 blocks create beautiful front-yard gardens, at no cost to participating residents.

Blocks in Bloom is about more than gardening. It’s about bringing neighbors together, creating welcoming spaces, investing in neighborhoods, and showing what’s possible when communities have the resources and support to grow.

Thank you to the Master Gardener volunteers, Block Captains, residents, and community partners who make this work possible 🌻

Today, I joined community members at The 54 Annual St. Josaphat’s Ukrainian Festival to celebrate the rich culture, traditions, music, food, and heritage of our Ukrainian neighbors. At a time when Ukraine continues to face unimaginable challenges, preserving and celebrating that culture is more important than ever. Thank you to St. Josaphat’s Ukrainian Catholic Church for continuing this beautiful tradition and creating a welcoming celebration for our community 🇺🇦

For decades, the Personal Needs Allowance for vulnerable residents in nursing homes and residential health care facilities has remained at just $50 per month, despite the rising cost of everyday necessities. Residents and advocates are calling for that amount to increase to $200 per month, with annual adjustments for inflation.

Our office joined this important conversation to listen to residents and stand with them in advocating for a PNA that reflects the realities of life today. I'm proud to co-sponsor S4744A and remain committed to ensuring New Yorkers living in long-term care have the dignity, independence, and resources they deserve.

Rochester has lost a remarkable historian, educator, mentor, and community leader. Dr. David Anderson dedicated more than six decades to ensuring that our community knew its history and understood the responsibility we have to carry it forward.

I had the privilege of presenting Dr. Anderson with the New York State Liberty Medal in 2022, recognizing his lifelong commitment to equity, access, and justice and his tireless work preserving the legacy of Frederick Douglass in Rochester.

Dr. Anderson didn’t simply preserve history. He inspired generations of people to learn from it, teach it, and build upon it. His impact will live on through the countless students, historians, advocates, and community members he mentored, and through the Rochester community he loved so deeply. May his memory be a blessing, and may we continue the work he so faithfully carried forward.

Congratulations to Danielle King, New York State Small Business Development Center Veteran Entrepreneur of the Year! We were proud to present Danielle with a Senate Proclamation in recognition of her entrepreneurial leadership and service to her community. Danielle’s work as the founder and owner of Skyn Therapy Wellness Spa is a powerful example of how small businesses can fill important gaps in our communities while creating space for people to feel seen, valued, and cared for.

Our office joined today's community listening session at Hillside hosted by the NYS Office of Mental Health and Department of Health to hear directly from families, providers, advocates, and young people about strengthening mental health services for children with complex needs. These conversations and community feedback help improve access, quality, and outcomes for families across our state. I am committed to uplifting families and will continue fighting to pass my bill, S7978A, to strengthen care coordination, avoid unnecessary hospital stays, and prioritize the wellbeing of children with complex needs.

Thank you to the Senior Care Alliance for recognizing and celebrating the advocacy done on behalf of older New Yorkers. Whether it's expanding access to care, supporting family caregivers, or fighting for the resources that help people age with dignity, this work has always been about ensuring every person is valued at every stage of life. I'm thankful to stand alongside so many organizations and advocates who share that commitment every day.
