is a not-for-profit organization with a mission to reduce poverty and crime in inner city neighborhoods through educating youth in geospatial literacy as well as employing affected youth to complete mapping and data management related tasks and projects. The GIS Scholar education program teaches young people to be leaders as well as teaching them about the importance of recognizing trends in their
community. Paying our Scholars doesn’t end at
providing compensation to youth in the community, allowing young people to earn money can improve the financial well-being of an entire family. Enabling city youth to provide themselves with their own food, clothing, school supplies, etc. is alleviating pressure from parents (or single parents) to stretch their pennies far beyond their financial means to meet their child’s basic needs and necessities. We are actively reducing poverty in our communities, and being that poverty is
directly related to crime, reducing crime in our neighborhoods. The beauty of GIS mapping is that you get to see that the world is bigger than your neighborhood. Those interacting with geospatial technologies enter a realm where the immediate issues faced in their community becomes nothing but another speck on the map. Scholars will grow to see their participation in GIS Scholars as somewhat of an escape from the issues that plague their existence daily, both by providing them a new perspective on the issues that they have experienced, as well as providing them with a clear path to solutions and success. Being that GIS is one of the fastest growing careers in the world now, we are putting our scholars in a position to be eligible for job positions in the GIS field.
