Measures for Justice

Measures for Justice We're leading a movement to change the future of criminal justice.

Since 2011, Measures for Justice (MFJ) has been on a mission to make good criminal justice data available and actionable to spur reform. We do this by collecting and releasing performance data from counties; working to standardize and improve criminal justice data policies; and delivering tools and services to ensure people can use the data to best effect.

Data Confidence Tip of the Week 💡

Align data with decisions. Data shouldn’t just sit in a report.

It should connect to real choices that affect neighborhoods—like where resources go, what programs expand, and how safety strategies evolve.

When data leads to visible action, communities can see how information turns into impact.

Celebrating one year with Rob, our Director of IT & DevOps! 🎉

Over the past year, Rob has helped keep MFJ running smoothly by supporting the hardware, software, systems, security, and infrastructure our teams rely on every day. From solving complex challenges to strengthening the systems behind our work, his impact is felt across the organization.

What keeps him motivated? A belief that transparency, accessibility, and accountability in the criminal justice system are causes worth working toward every day. Outside of work, you can find Rob gardening, cycling, singing in choir, or spending time with his wife and their cats and rabbits.

Thank you for everything you bring to MFJ, Rob — we’re grateful to have you on the team!

Last Thursday was a big day for MFJ in giving back to the Rochester community! A stellar group of MFJ'ers participated in United Way of Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes' annual Day of Caring and beautified The Rochester Riverside Cemetery. As the largest community-wide volunteer event in Rochester, Measures for Justice was proud to participate and give back to our hometown alongside other area organizations and nonprofits.🍃🤝

Justice... runs on data! 🏃📊

Yesterday, some MFJ'ers hit the streets of Rochester to compete in JPMorganChase's 5k Corporate Challenge! Not only was it a fantastic way for us to bond as a team on a gorgeous spring night, but we also gave back and raised money for Foodlink. 🍎

While the work we do is national, we never forget about local impact. Thank you to all who came out to support the hometown community we love so much!

We have officially kicked off the Commons Ambassador Program — an exciting new chapter for the Commons community. 🎉

Commons brings communities and public servants together around criminal justice data, and our ambassadors will play a key role in strengthening those connections. As trusted practitioners and community leaders, they’ll help elevate community voices, amplify Commons, encourage shared learning, and bring local context to conversations across the MFJ Collective platform.

We’re excited for the energy, insight, and collaboration this group will bring! Join the MFJ Collective and be a part of it: https://mfj-collective.measuresforjustice.org

In case you missed it 🎥

Last week, we gathered in Montgomery, Alabama for our first National Impact Council convening- bringing together leaders from across the justice system, academia, and community organizations for honest conversation about data, decision-making, and impact.

What made this time together meaningful wasn’t just what was discussed, but who was in the room together. We’re grateful for the trust, candor, and collaboration that shaped these conversations, and we’re excited for what’s ahead.

Today, the West Sacramento Police Department updated data on its public platform, Commons. The data runs through June 2025 and covers the essentials- stops, force, response times, officer wellness, and more. Huge thanks to the West Sacramento Police Department. Our partnership has helped make them one of the most transparent police departments in the country.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month 💚

On his first day as a police officer, Major Ailen Mitchell witnessed a traumatic event and quickly realized there was little support for officers facing the mental toll of the job.

Today, he’s using his voice to push for change and create safer spaces for others in law enforcement. Because the truth is: more officers struggle with mental health challenges than in the line of duty.

Awareness matters. Data matters. And conversations matter.

911 hang-up calls might seem harmless - but they have real impact.

Every time a 911 call is disconnected, dispatchers are required to follow up. That can mean callbacks, time spent assessing risk, and sometimes sending officers, without knowing if there’s an actual emergency.

New research from Measures for Justice shows that:
🚨 Hang-up calls can place a significant strain on emergency response systems
📞 They can delay response times for real emergencies
📊 And in many cases, agencies don’t have the data they need to fully understand what’s happening

Allie Ackles, Senior Research Associate II at MFJ, moderated the Rewriting the Narrative panel this past week at the Reentry Association Of Western NY - RAWNY conference.

At MFJ, our work starts with data. But data alone doesn’t change outcomes. Stories do. Relationships do. This panel highlighted how the narratives we shape around reentry influence who gets hired, housed, and given a second chance. From employers to advocates to peers, each perspective showed what it takes to move from data to real impact.

We’re proud to support data-informed conversations that help drive meaningful change in our Rochester community.
