Success begins with a well-rounded quality education. Kids will get the support they need to learn, grow and thrive.

How we foster learning:
ACHIEVING MILESTONES
Together with our partners, we help children achieve developmental milestones by filling their out-of-school time with learning and enrichment, and through caregiver encouragement and support.

STRONG, EMPOWERED YOUTH
United Way's program partners help children develop strong self-esteem, and empower them to make healthy choices by focusing on social, emotional and physical health during their out-of-school time. Our partners also provide long-term positive mentoring relationships to help youth thrive.

PREPARED FOR SUCCESS
We help local youth successfully transition to young adulthood by investing in career exploration and preparation to help improve high school graduation and future success.

The United Way of Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes helps foster learning by filling out-of-school time with learning and enrichment, and through caregiver encouragement and support.

The only band-aids we hand out are to kids getting in their health and fitness requirements in our after-school and summer learning programs. United Way is an innovative change-maker, implicitly focused on equity and inclusion. We are uniquely positioned to understand community needs, identify disparities, and improve lives through direct service, collaborations, volunteerism, and advocacy. We
are dedicated to identifying the greatest needs in the community and investing Community Impact Fund dollars in evidence-based and preventative programs. All United Way partner programs and initiatives are monitored, measured, and evaluated regularly.

A healthy meal is critical to a student’s well-being, yet many children are deprived of that in our region, due to food insecurity. In the Finger Lakes region, more than 156,000 residents, including more than 52,000 children, are considered food insecure.

Studies suggest food insecurity, especially in children, is linked with an increased risk of birth defects, cognitive and behavioral problems, and depression. All of these factors impact the general well-being of a community. Children from food secure households generally tend to be more successful than those from food insecure households.

Gifts to United Way’s Community Impact Fund help support local programs that help feed families. Just $20 a week can help provide 3,000 meals to families and individuals who don’t have enough to eat at home.

80% of a person’s health and overall wellbeing is related to social determinants of health—those life experiences and conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age.

How we improve health:
MEETING BASIC NEEDS
United Way partners with programs that help meet people's basic needs, including increased access to nutritious food, clothing, transportation, and shelter for youth and victims of interpersonal violence.

CREATING HEALTHY CONNECTIONS
Our partner programs help foster positive, sustaining social and emotional connections throughout an individual's lifespan. This includes improving the health and well-being of pregnant women, and families with young children, and helping older adults age safely in place.

HEALING FROM TRAUMA
People who have experienced trauma need opportunities to heal. United Way's partner programs provide environments that promote healing and recovery that build on the resilience within people, and avoid practices and services that may inadvertently re-traumatize individuals.
