Alumni Article: Ensign Alex Dudek
In October 2015, Ensign Alex Dudek reported to NAS Pensacola, FL— “The Cradle of Naval Aviation” —where all Student Naval Aviators (SNAs) and Student Naval Flight Officers (SNFOs) begin their aviation career. Once there, he completed Introductory Flight Screening (IFS), where he flew a Piper Cherokee. After 11 flights and a check ride—a flight graded by an instructor—he soloed, taking the aircraft up by himself.
Next, Ensign Dudek completed Aviation Preflight Indoctrination (API). This 6-week course consisted of four weeks of academics, including topics such as aerodynamics, weather, engines, navigation and flight rules and regulations. The last two weeks of API covered land and water survival training.
In April 2016, Ensign Dudek began the Primary phase of training in Corpus Christi, TX, where he joined the VT-28 Rangers. There, he flew the T-6 Texan II. In the first phase of Primary, Ensign Dudek learned the basics of flying the T-6, culminating in a check ride and solo. After that, he learned to perform various aerobatic maneuvers, such as the wing-over, aileron roll, barrel roll, loop, Cuban eight, Immelmann, split S and clover leaf. After another check ride, Ensign Dudek was allowed to do most of these aerobatic maneuvers by himself! Following this exhilarating experience, Ensign Dudek reported to his favorite phase, known as "forms," where he learned to fly his aircraft about 20 feet away from another aircraft. Ensign Dudek was eventually placed as the lead aircraft in a flight of three, with his squadron executive officer as his flight partner.
The last portion of Primary, known as "instruments," was where Ensign Dudek learned how to fly and navigate solely off his instruments, i.e. he couldn’t look outside the cockpit. After successful completion of his instrument check ride and Primary in February 2017, Ensign Dudek was selected for his top choice of rotary wing training. He then reported to NAS Whiting Field in Milton, FL, and is currently waiting to begin Advanced Helicopter Training. In this portion of flight school, Ensign Dudek will learn how to hover and fly the TH-57 Sea Ranger. Additionally, he will be exposed to night vision goggle training and more navigation training. Upon completion of Advanced Helicopter Training, Ensign Dudek will earn his "Wings of Gold" and officially gain the title of Naval Aviator!
