Our Story
The Homeless Center for Strafford County is a not for profit shelter that has been helping women, children and families in the Seacoast area for 20 years. The goal of HCSC is to first provide shelter and then to provide homeless clients with professional case management to assist the residents with the resources and support they need to overcome barriers to homelessness.
In addition to case management, HCSC has been fortunate enough to provide classes in nutritional shopping and cooking, classes in parenting communication and classes in the arts. The shelter staff work individually on resume creation and interview skills with residents. With each building block of education we aspire to provide the needed knowledge and skills to propel families into work roles and permanent housing. The Homeless Center for Strafford County is located in Rochester NH. Waste Management has generously “free leased” the shelter house to HCSC, since 2001. Without the generosity of individual & corporate donors, along with the faith based community, we would not exist; this is where the majority of our funding originates from. We are in need of a new shelter location by Spring of 2021 and are currently running a capital campaign to raise funds for the new location.
The shelter is open 24 hours a day during the operational season. With only 6 paid staff, HCSC relies heavily on the generosity and participation of volunteers for shift coverage and projects. HCSC is lucky enough to have 42 active volunteers listed in our volunteer database and scheduling system. Volunteer shifts range from 2-5 hours and can be scheduled weekly or monthly. If helping vulnerable families in your community interests you please contact the shelter to schedule a volunteer training session.
We are always asked by donors what we need. We keep a list on our website that lists our current needs. The two top donation areas that have the highest needs are gift cards to grocery stores, staples, target, Walmart, amazon or financial support. We run the shelter on a very lean budget that is about 35% of any other shelter budget in the Southern New Hampshire area. We hope you will consider supporting the shelter and its programs with a financial gift via our website or a check mailed to P.O. Box 7306 Rochester NH 03839.
