Gates Firefighters IAFF Local 3792

Gates Firefighters IAFF Local 3792 The IAFF Local 3792 is the union that represents the professional firefighters of the town of Gates. We staff all three fire stations in the town.
(1)

The Gates Fire District is a combination fire department that operates three fire stations serving more than 20 square miles comprised of all of the Town of Gates and a portion of the Town of Chili. We border the west side of the City of Rochester and protect a population of roughly 32,000 people. Our district is heavily developed and contains large industrial complexes, including the Rochester Te

chnology Park, refineries and oil storage, schools, nursing homes, rail lines and more miles of expressway than any other fire district in Monroe County. Our district also surrounds the Greater Rochester International Airport and borders both the Genesee River and the Erie Canal. Station 1 on Chili Avenue is staffed with Engine 4512 (2FF & 1 Officer), Truck 4510 (2FF & 1 Officer), Battalion Chief and a Dispatcher. Station 2 is located on the corner of Long Pond Rd & Spencerport Rd and is staffed with Engine 4522 (3 FF & 1 Officer). Station 3 on Coldwater Road is staffed with Truck 4530 (2FF & 1 Officer). The department also has a full time Fire Chief, Assistant Chief, Health and Safety Officer, and Training Officer. The firefighters and dispatchers of Local 3792 share a long association with the Gates Fire District. In the 1970’s, the first full time employees worked primarily as dispatchers and were called “laborers”. During this time, the call volume of the department increased while the population of the area began a steady growth. In 1985, the laborers actually began responding to fires and other incidents as firefighters while the number of volunteer firefighters began a slow and steady decline, and as the call volume continued to increase. The Gates Fire District responds to more than 5,500 calls annually. In 1989, the laborers were officially indoctrinated into the civil service system, and their job titles became “firefighters”. On September 24, 1997, the firefighters and dispatchers of the Gates Fire District were inducted into the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF). This was considered a major step in protecting the working conditions, benefits and welfare of the members and their families. By 1996, the number of civil service firefighters grew to 8, along with two dispatchers who were also granted civil service status. During this time, the members established themselves as a vital part of the Gates Fire District as professional firefighters and dispatchers. Today, there are 63 professional firefighters along with 4 professional dispatchers. We are proud to report there is career staffing at all three fire houses in the town. There is 1 engine, 1 Truck, and a Battalion chief at headquarters, 1 engine at station 2, and 1 Truck at station 3. We are committed to providing 24 -7 coverage to the citizens of the town of Gates and a portion of Chili!

🚨 Lithium Ion Battery Fire🚨

Shortly after midnight this morning a resident on Normandale Drive was awoken by their “WORKING SMOKE ALARMS”. The resident found smoke filling the home and was quickly able to help evacuate the rest of the residents. While evacuating the resident came across a lithium ion battery pack that was on fire in the home. The resident was able to remove the battery from the home and call 911.

Our companies arrived on scene within 4 minutes to find a lithium ion battery pack located in the driveway in thermal runaway. A level 0 Haz mat was declared which brought the Monroe County Fire Bureau hazmat rep to the scene to properly secure the battery and take it away for disposal. The resident was treated by our members for injuries sustained during the fire while removing the battery.

This call emphasized the importance of “working smoke alarms” which quickly alerted the residents and were able to exit the structure before conditions became much worse. Lithium ion batteries are by certain apart of our everyday lives now and we can find them in just about anything nowadays. While these batteries are very resourceful they come with some very serious dangers. Always make sure you’re buying approved and certified batteries by laboratories such as UL. Be sure to follow all of the manufacturers recommendations when using the batteries, charging and storing them after use.
