Last night’s City Council meeting included an important discussion about e-bikes and bicycle safety in downtown Rochester.

After discussion, the Council approved a new ordinance establishing bicycle restrictions in portions of downtown. The ordinance passed by a vote of 6-1, and I voted no.

I want to be clear that my vote was not against safety or efforts to educate on safety downtown. I absolutely support making our downtown safer for everyone - pedestrians, cyclists, businesses, and families.

My concern was about process, not purpose.

Before we adopt ordinances that create new enforceable laws, I believe we should take the time to engage the community, evaluate infrastructure and connectivity, develop an enforcement plan, and consider long-term solutions alongside education and partnerships. Those conversations help us build policies that are thoughtful, practical, and supported by the people they affect.

Although I voted differently, I respect my colleagues and appreciate the discussion. Now that the ordinance has passed, I hope we continue working together on the next steps - improving bicycle infrastructure, identifying safe alternative routes, educating riders, and making sure implementation is successful.

Thank you to everyone who attended the meeting, shared your thoughts, or continues to stay engaged in our community. Your voices matter, and I will continue working to ensure Rochester remains a safe, welcoming, and transparent place to live.

Spend July searching for Waldo throughout Rochester while visiting local businesses and collecting stamps for prizes. What a fun way to explore downtown and support our small businesses!

A big thank you to Kristi Trevarrow, our DDA Director, for the invitation and for all she does to support our downtown. I'm incredibly proud of our vibrant Main Street, the local businesses that make it special, and the people who work every day to help our community thrive!
