CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Lilac Roots, a community literary journal, is seeking submissions from writers who live or work in the greater Rochester area. We want to give a voice to local writers of all ages and backgrounds - the only requirement is that you have some connection (past or present) to the city of Rochester.

Our inaugural issue, which will be published in the fall of 2021, will be centered around the theme of new beginnings. Writers are invited to interpret this theme in any way they choose. Submissions of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction (such as personal essays and memoirs) are welcome. The publication will be edited by Katie Hogan O’Connor, former poet laureate of the City of Rochester.

Previously published work is accepted if you retain publication rights. Pease include the original publication information so that credit may be given. Multiple entries of up to 5 pieces per contributor are accepted, but submissions should not exceed 3,000 words.

All contributors will receive a copy of the publication featuring their work.

To submit an entry, please:

Include the writer’s full name and contact information (phone, email, and mailing address)
Include a 3-4 sentence bio that indicates the writer’s connection to Rochester
Write “SUBMISSION” on the subject line
Submit all entries and questions to: [email protected]

Submissions will be accepted through August 31, 2021.

Keep in mind your performing arts community here in Rochester. It's going to be a long haul to see live performances safely. This is a great article about some of the logistics that the Strafford Wind Symphony, Rochester Opera House and Granite State Choral Society, not mention all the local bands and venue, will have to contend with moving forward. Please continue to support them as they will be facing extremely hard decisions regarding continued viability in the coming months.
