Literacy is about more than reading and writing. It helps people understand a job application, complete a training program, build a budget, manage credit, and make informed decisions for their families.

This International Literacy Day, we’re celebrating the knowledge and skills that help people move toward greater opportunity and financial stability.

Through our focus on workforce development and financial literacy, United Way of York County connects individuals and families with education, job training, financial counseling, tools, and resources that can help them earn a livable wage and build a more stable future.

When people have the skills and information they need to move forward, our entire community becomes stronger.

September is National Preparedness Month. Are you ready for the unexpected?

Being prepared is about more than stocking up before severe weather. It’s having a plan, knowing where to find help, understanding what an unexpected expense could mean for your household, and having people and resources you can turn to when you need them.

The good news? You don’t have to do everything at once.

This month, start with ONE step:

🏠 Build your emergency supplies.
📋 Build your family’s plan.
💵 Build your financial safety net when possible.
🤝 Build your connections with neighbors and community resources.

In our latest blog, we're sharing practical ways to strengthen your household's resiliency and how organizations across York County are working together through YC-COAD to help our community prepare and recover.

Strong households. Connected communities. A more resilient York County.

September is National Preparedness Month, a time to think about what we can do today to be better prepared when the unexpected happens. When we hear “disaster preparedness,” it’s easy to picture bottled water, flashlights, batteries, and weather alerts. Those things matter. But being prepared ...

Walking a mile in someone else's shoes can change the way we serve our community.

Last week, United Way of York County had the opportunity to facilitate our Empathy Simulation with counselors from across Rock Hill Schools during their Back to School kickoff.

Through the simulation, participants stepped into the lives of local families navigating real-world challenges like childcare, transportation, employment, healthcare, and unexpected expenses. More importantly, they experienced how access to community resources, supportive relationships, and compassionate systems can make all the difference.

A huge thank you to Rock Hill Schools for investing in this experience and for the incredible work your counselors do every day to support students and families.

Interested in bringing the Empathy Simulation to your workplace, school, civic group, or organization? We'd love to help your team build understanding, strengthen compassion, and explore how we can work together to create a more financially stable York County.

We are grateful to spend the afternoon having meaningful conversations and sharing resources with the Applied Technology Center teachers and staff.

ATC staff engaged in our ALICE Household Survival Simulation, where groups take on the role of an ALICE family and make challenging decisions while navigating difficult, yet realistic barriers to stability. We appreciate the thoughtful discussion and wish you all a happy start to the school year!

Thank you, S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce for partnering with us to make this time together possible.

If you are interested in hosting a simulation for your business, church group, rotary club, or community group, please visit: https://www.unitedwayofyc.org/household-survival-simulation-interest-form/
