The Better Care Reconciliation Act, the Republican Party's landmark legislation that would repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act and contribute to the loss of insurance of approximately 22 million people by 2026, may experience a delay in the Senate. Republican leadership under Mitch McConnell may delay a vote on the bill until after Congress's July 4th recess.
This comes in part because at least ten members of the Senate Republicans have expressed opposition to the bill -- although some hard-line conservatives feel the measure doesn't go far enough, there are moderates who feel that the negative impact of the legislation on the American people is too great.
It is the position of Augustana College Democrats, and the greater Democratic Party, that this proposal goes too far in eliminating health care benefits for those who need it; likewise, leaving essential aspects of health care coverage up to the states (such as concerning coverage for preexisting conditions, mental health care, women's health initiatives, and elderly care programs) would create a severe disparity in the level of and availability of health care for all people through discriminatory practices.
Please contact your congresspersons today and urge them to vote against the Senate bill.
NPR has published an analysis the effect Republican efforts will have on the ACA (see link 1, below). Likewise, Reuters explains several of the positions taken on the bill, including a link to the Congressional Budget Office's infographic on Medicaid coverage (link 2). NPR and Fox News have both published polls on the recent Senate draft, best used together for a better understanding of the situation (links 3 and 4).
