⚠️TRAFFIC ALERT: HOMECOMING PARADE 🏈🥁

The Rock Island High School Homecoming parade is this Friday, Sept. 25, starting at 3:30 p.m. Parade participants will begin staging along 24th Street between 13th and 18th avenues, with the parade proceeding south on 24th Street to 25th Avenue, then west on 25th Avenue to Rock Island High School. Traffic control will be present to ensure a safe parade. Please plan your travel accordingly. Thank you!

I recently attended the Illinois Municipal League Conference, where I participated in several sessions focused on issues directly affecting municipalities across Illinois.

The sessions covered:

• TIF best practices, ethics, accountability, and long-term planning
• How communities are using TIF and combining it with other incentives
• Land banks and strategies for addressing vacant or abandoned properties
• Affordable housing success stories
• Solar energy and battery-storage regulations
• Data center development and its impact on utilities, infrastructure, taxes, and neighborhoods
• Liquor and gaming licensing updates
• Social media policies and First Amendment considerations
• An Alderman and Trustee Roundtable with elected officials from communities throughout Illinois
• And several other relevant topics

The TIF sessions were especially relevant as we continue discussing how Rock Island’s TIF districts can better support redevelopment, existing businesses, housing, infrastructure, and the residents who live within those districts.

I also appreciated hearing how other communities are addressing affordable housing, vacant properties, renewable-energy projects, data centers, public communication, and changing state regulations.

Professional development is valuable only when we bring the information home and put it to work. I look forward to using what I learned to ask informed questions, strengthen public accountability, and help make thoughtful decisions for Ward 3 and the entire City of Rock Island.

🏘️ WARD 3 NEIGHBORHOOD MEETING

Residents living along N 9th St to 12th Streets, from 31st Avenue through 35th Avenue, are invited to attend a neighborhood meeting to discuss forming a neighborhood association.

📅 Wednesday, October 7, 2026
🕕 6:00 p.m.
📍 South Rock Island Township
4330 11th Street, Rock Island

A neighborhood association can give residents an organized way to:

• Communicate and work together
• Address neighborhood safety and property concerns
• Build relationships with City departments and community organizations
• Plan cleanups, family activities and other neighborhood events
• Strengthen the overall quality of life in the neighborhood

As the former President of Greenbush Neighbors, I will share examples of our monthly meetings, community events and other activities that helped residents become more connected and involved.

Residents throughout the designated area are strongly encouraged to attend, share their ideas and help determine the next steps. You do not have to hold a leadership position—your voice and participation are what matter.

Sunday evening, the Rock Island Knights of Columbus held its 47th annual civic awards recognizing the Rock Island police officer and firefighter of the year.

Congratulations to Officer Anzuruni Kimba and Fire Marshal Jon Briggs who were chosen by their peers for outstanding service to our community.

📢 Rock Island City Council Meeting — Monday, September 14

The meeting will begin at 5:45 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, 1528 Third Avenue.

Two presentations are scheduled:

🌉 U.S. 67 Centennial Bridge Project Update

🏛️ Proposed City Hall Space Evaluation and Reconfiguration Plan, presented by Studio 483 Architects

Residents may attend in person or watch the meeting live through the City of Rock Island’s website.
