This hangs in the Mayor’s Office at City Hall.

I believe the public should be able to see the standards I expect of myself and of the administration I lead.

They are not slogans, and putting them on a wall does not make them true. They matter only if our conduct reflects them in the decisions we make, the way we treat people, and the way we exercise the authority entrusted to us.

Making these standards public means you can hold me accountable to them.

Authority is justified only when exercised responsibly, fairly, and with respect for the people it affects.

We rise or fall to our standards.

In Part 2 of our conversation with local archaeologist Dudley Gardner, we continue exploring the history of Section 26 and how the area transformed over time. Dudley discusses the subdivision of Section 26 and the development of landmarks that remain important to our community today, including Washington School, Saints Cyril and Methodius (SCM) Church, and the Slovenski Dom.

Dudley also explains why archaeology is essential to uncovering the history of this area. Many of the stories buried beneath the surface can only be discovered through careful excavation. To preserve valuable artifacts, archaeologists avoid wetting excavation sites, as moisture can cause iron objects to rust and deteriorate. That's why you may notice yellowed grass in portions of Washington Park—it's a result of archaeological work designed to protect and preserve our community's history.
