SCFD covers over 658,000 acres of non federal lands within the unincorporated 6,400 sq. miles of the county for about a $1/acre per year with 3 full time, 14 seasonal and 12 volunteers. We staff our station year around M-F. During the peak months of the fire season, we staff multiple fire engines 7 days a week around the county.
Did you also know that the Sweetwater County Fire Department is the only fire department that works with all the other fire departments in the county. Through the County Fire Warden and our firefighters, we are the ONLY hub with all the fire departments in Sweetwater County, its 5 neighboring counties, the Ashley NF, BLM, and two border states. Some departments work with a few of these agencies, but SCFD is the only one that works with all of them.
This may all go away on Tuesday, March 15th at 1130 am if the BOCC votes to close our doors and contract with 3 separate fire departments (Option 3) to try and provide fire protection across 2/3rds of the county.
SCFD does not support Option 3 and requests the BOCC to keep us open, operational, and funded in our current capacity.
We support the BOCC in its efforts to streamline and unify with the other fire departments in the county so we can all operate as one to be as effective and efficient as absolutely possible. Yes, this would take time but in the end is the best option for the entire county. isn't this what is trying to be accomplished with the Ambulance Service? No one is rushing, all options were explored and in the end it took them right back to an independent study done 15 years ago by a third party who specializes in EMS studies.
Doesn't the fire service of this county deserve the same? Lets work towards a solution that best utilizes all of our personnel, equipment, apparatus, grants and funding. Do it by an outside, independent professional organization. It will be a long and challenging effort, but if the county wants a true solution and unification of its fire service it is worth the time to do it the right way first.
These are and have been the facts.
The Sweetwater County Fire Department stands behind these facts that have been and will continue to be posted. We do not, and will not post rumors or assumptions. The public we serve and pay our wages needs to know who we are and what we do. We are a professional organization with real firefighters who put their lives on the line to protect all of our communities, and serve our residents and guests in every aspect of public service available. Anyone is welcome to call the SCFD at (307) 922-5360 with any questions or concerns.
