Later today, I will be participating in a hearing of the Public Safety Committee, where a bill on gun shot reporting that I am co-prime-sponsoring with my friend and colleague, Councilmember Oswald Feliz, will be discussed.
Tracking shots fired is essential if we want to stop gun violence before someone gets hurt. When a gun is fired, even if no one is hit, someone was likely being targeted, and this is a clear warning that violence is escalating in a neighborhood.
This data will help police act proactively, rather than only responding after a tragedy, and Iโm proud to co-sponsor legislation like this that gives our officers another tool to keep New Yorkers safe. Thank you for the coverage, New York Daily News.
The NYPD will have to make public any information about incidents in which someone fires a gun, even if no one is struck, under terms of a bill being considered by the City Council.
