On Saturday, at Floyd Bennett Field, over 30 cyclists joined us for a unique bike tour across the original runways of NYCโ€™s first municipal airport, which is now a one-of-a-kind National Park Site spanning 1,300 acres. ๐Ÿšฒ

Participants enjoyed a narration from Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy executive director, Terri Carta, of the parkโ€™s aviation heritage, panoramic vistas of its natural areas, and a visit to Hangar B, which houses a large collection of vintage aircraft maintained by volunteers and the National Park Service. โœˆ๏ธ

We also saw RC jet planes, fishers, hikers, gardeners, archers, and countless birds during our 6 mile journey across the park. THANK YOU to everyone for coming, and thank you Gateway National Recreation Area for overseeing this special place. ๐ŸŽฃ ๐Ÿฆ ๐Ÿน ๐ŸŒฑ

If youโ€™d like to join our next bike tour of Floyd Bennett Field, mark your calendar for October 17. More details at JBRPC.org/events OR the link in our bio ๐Ÿ”—

THANK YOU to everyone who came out to our Pollinator Explorers family program with Edgemere Farm Works at Edgemere Farm ๐Ÿฆ‹

We had a wonderful time celebrating pollinators and their important role in our community! ๐Ÿ

Designed for children ages 2โ€“10 and their caregivers, this interactive event explored how bees, butterflies, and other pollinators help grow the food we eat and support healthy ecosystems right here in Rockaway. ๐ŸŒท

Youngsters enjoyed a guided garden tour, playful learning activities including making their own โ€œinsect hotelsโ€ using upcycled and foraged materials, and a chance to take home a native plant to support pollinators. ๐Ÿชด

Thank you Edgemere Farm Works and Edgemere Farm for being such excellent partners ๐Ÿ™

THANK YOU to the wonderful corporate volunteers who joined us this week at the Arverne East Nature Preserve, on the Rockaway Peninsula. ๐Ÿ™

Together we removed many bags-worth of invasive vegetation, planted hundreds of plugs of native species, and removed hundreds of pounds of debris from the boardwalk and shoreline. ๐Ÿ’ช

These larger scale ecological efforts would be difficult to achieve without such motivated corporate volunteers. ๐ŸŒฑ ๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ ๐ŸŒŽ

If youโ€™d like to get your colleagues outside and do some good for the environment, check out our corporate volunteering page at JBRPC.org/corporate-volunteering OR the link in our bio ๐Ÿ”—

Our friends at Amateur Astronomers Association host free monthly observing sessions at Floyd Bennett Field, and there's a whole lot going on in our night skies right now. ๐Ÿ”ญ

According to Gothamist, "Summer stargazing starts this month with the rise of an astronomical phenomenon known as the Summer Triangle. The center of our own galaxy, the Milky Way, is one of the evening highlights of the summer skies. June will also get a double-billing of two meteor showers."

Floyd Bennett Field, situated away from the city's most intense light pollution, is prime for celestial observing. ๐ŸŒŒ

If you'd like to learn about future observing sessions, and other free activities this spring and summer at Floyd Bennett Field, head to JBRPC.org/fbf

A 55% loss in just 22 years. The Black-crowned Night Heron, historically the most abundant wading bird in our harbor, is vanishing fast. Jamaica Bay is a principal habitat for this famous bird.

New research led by NYC Bird Alliance published in the scientific journal Conservation Science and Practice confirms that without action, these birds face local as soon as 2037.

The good news? We can save this bird.

๐ŸšจWeโ€™re rallying New Yorkers to call on city and state policymakers to support more research and institute better protections for .

โžก You can help by signing NYC Bird Alliance's petition!

๐Ÿ”ŽNYC Bird Alliance scientists are working to answer the big question: what is causing Black-crowned Night Heronโ€™s decline? Weโ€™ll be researching predation, human disturbance, water quality, and more.

Visit NYC Bird Alliance's website (๐Ÿ”— link in bio) to sign the petition, share your sightings and stories, and sign up for action alerts to protect this bird. The journey to save Black-crowned Night Heron is only just beginning!

Together, we will save this bird.

Thank you PS 62 - Magnet School of Computer Science and Innovation for joining us at Rockaway Beach last week!

We had a great time meeting more fiddler crabs, observing buried shells within the strata of the beach, and learning about the broader ecosystem of the Rockaway peninsula. ๐Ÿฆ€

This field trip was part of our Wild Neighbors Watch curriculum, which introduces local public school students to ecology in Brooklyn and Queens. ๐ŸŒŠ
