Crashland No More!

The bags are finally coming down off the signals as we officially open the redesign of Ashland Place in Downtown Brooklyn.

The project has converted the remaining, southernmost block of Ashland Place from a two-way street to a northbound one-way street with the addition of a two-way protected bike lane. Ashland Place and Navy Street now provide a critical connection of nearly 5.5 miles of continuous protected bike lane from Sunset Park to DUMBO, providing additional bike network connections to Manhattan, North Brooklyn, and Western Queens.

This stretch has been something that cyclists have avoided in recent years due to street safety issues. The redesign will bring a host of safety benefits for all New Yorkers, including pedestrians and drivers, by shortening crossing distances and reducing reckless driving behavior.

Faster buses are coming to one of Harlem’s busiest streets.

After extensive community outreach, we’re launched a redesign of 116th Street that prioritizes faster bus service and safer travel for everyone.

The project includes:
Dedicated bus lanes to improve reliability
New pedestrian safety improvements and concrete refuge islands
Protected bike lanes
Additional crossing opportunities
Updated curb management to support business and deliveries

More than 65,000 people ride the bus on this stretch of 116th Street each day. These improvements will reduce delays, improve reliability, and create a safer, more connected street for everyone.

After decades of delay, we’re fixing the BQE.

The 1.5 mile city-owned potion of the BQE, which includes the triple cantilever, is in desperate need of rehabilitation. It’s 72 years old, 20 years past its design life, and is deteriorating under the weight of 130,000 vehicles every day — more than double its intended capacity. The 10-year rehabilitation will break ground in 2030 to fix the aging concrete and repair the triple cantilever to extend BQE Central’s design life for 40 years.

We are going to do it all while keeping traffic moving with two dedicated roadways that allow repairs to be made while protecting local streets from heavy traffic. This includes a two-level highway bypass on top of Furman Street, below the promenade, from Atlantic Avenue to Columbia Heights and a second temporary, elevated highway bypass from Columbia Heights, over the Brooklyn Bridge approach, to the Manhattan Bridge. 

The time has come to finally rehabilitate the BQE and we’re stepping up to the plate.

Are roundabouts safer than standard intersections?

On the latest episode of Curb Enthusiasm, transportation expert Sam “Gridlock Sam” Schwartz weighs in.

While roundabouts can offer significant safety benefits, Sam explains why New York City’s dense street network, high pedestrian volumes and cycling activity can make them challenging in certain locations. He also shares his thoughts on where roundabouts could make the most sense across the city.

Earlier this month we held a Fast Buses Central Brooklyn Workshop to hear feedback from the community as we plan ways to increase bus speeds and improve service on three critical Central Brooklyn bus corridors: Flatbush Avenue, Church Avenue, and Utica Avenue.

These streets carry 150,000 bus riders across 13 routes every day. On some of these routes, buses can move as slowly as 5 mph. The New Yorkers who depend on these bus lines deserve better and we are working with them to develop short-terms bus-priority improvements that can be quickly implemented, along with a long-term vision for world-class bus service.

The streets just sound different during Summer Streets.

Three Saturdays of Manhattan Summer Streets are in the books for this year, but there’s still Summer Streets in Brooklyn and the Bronx on Saturday, August 22.
