On February 14, 1954, Rockdale Auxiliary Police Officer, Marion Reuben Caywood, was killed in the line of duty while serving the citizens of Rockdale, Texas. On this date, Officer Caywood and Chief of Police, Fred Trammel, spotted a vehicle in the immediate vicinity of a convenience store that had been recently burglarized. As the officers went to investigate, the juvenile suspects sped off. Chief Trammel attempted to overtake the suspect’s car, but the suspect driver rammed the Chief’s car, causing it to flip over. Officer Caywood was thrown from the car and pinned underneath. Officer Caywood died before help arrived. The suspects were later apprehended. Officer Caywood was a veteran of WWII, and also a member of the Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department. Officer Caywood was laid to rest at the Sandy Point Cemetery, east of Rockdale. His name is inscribed on the Texas Peace Officer’s Memorial in Austin, Texas, and on the National Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial in Washington, DC. After 72 years, Officer Marion Reuben Caywood’s service and sacrifice for our community is not forgotten. Rest in peace, brother. E.O.W 2/14/54
