Friends of OTFD:

The next 36 to 48 hours are going to be interesting.

Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories are now in effect across much of the western half of Michigan as of noon here on January 18th, 2026. For the winter weather advisories, blowing snow, reduced visibilities, and totals largely 2-5" are expected, while in the warnings, totals of 6" or greater are possible, but will be hard to measure due to blizzard-like conditions. Travel especially across the lake effect areas will be considered life-threatening as relayed by the National Weather Service.

For official snowfall totals for lake effect snow and system snow between now and the end of Monday, click on our profile. Areas without an active alert will still get snow too.

Oakfield Township Residents:

Travel impacts for Monday will be quite high across the state. We took some of your feedback and made the map based on how "isolated" or "widespread" travel disruptions may be.

🟨So, let's start with the east side. If you live in the YELLOW zone, this means isolated travel disruptions may exist. Snow squalls will drift into this zone off and on through the day, but it won't be snowing for everyone all at once. Disruptions are possible, but should be on a more isolated basis.

🟧Orange zones will see more lake effect snow banding which could lead to scattered disruptions. Plan on leaving early if you have places to be.

🟥Red zone will see widespread disruptions due to moderate to heavy snowfall and blowing winds. The combination leads to whiteouts, near blizzards conditions, and snow covered roadways. We expect more widespread impacts and disruptions in this zone.

🟪Purple zone................... don't. Snowfall will be piling up rapidly and winds will be cranking. Hunker down, and don't venture out unless you absolutely have to. Although we have no authority, we as meteorologists and as humans would not advise traveling in the northern half of the UP.

Oakfield Township Residents:

⚠️ Winter storm and high wind watches have been posted for West Michigan.

For the winter storm watch, 3-6+" of lake-effect will combine with wind gusts to 55 mph to create whiteout conditions at times. Dangerous travel is expected Monday, especially through mid-afternoon.

For the high wind watch, wind gusts to 55 mph will combine with 1-3" of snow to create occasionally dangerous driving conditions.

Obviously it's early but look out for changing weather reports as we move closer to this winter storm event.

Good Afternoon Friends,

Last night at about 1815, Oakfield Township Fire Department was dispatched to a reported accident at 14 Mile and Ramsdell. Early information suggested two vehicles and a UTV were involved, with a possible injury. Aero Med was placed on standby.

As we continued in, updated details indicated the UTV had fallen off a trailer, another vehicle had struck it, and no injuries were being reported. All Oakfield units were cleared.

But the situation didn’t end there. One of our responders, heading home and already in the area, came across the scene. The west bound lane was blocked by the disabled vehicle and the UTV. Two bystanders were in the road with flashlights trying to direct traffic, and their vehicle was parked across the lane.

They were trying to help, but it created a dangerous setup, dark roadway, no safety gear, and no proper lighting. Our responders stepped in to take over traffic control.

This is where the reminder comes in. When you see flashing emergency lights, you need to slow down. It doesn’t matter which side of the road the responders are on. Last night, we had three vehicles come out of the passing lane at speeds far above the limit, braking hard at the last second. One driver even entered the scene fast and hit the cones set up. That driver ended up speaking with the state trooper who was there.

So here’s the bottom line: if you see a vehicle on the shoulder with hazard lights on, slow down. If you see emergency lights, slow down and move over. Drive through these scenes like your own family is working them. At the end of the night, we want to go home to our families too.

Slow down. Move over.

Thank you.
